We're in the middle of buying our first home (YAY!! I think) and we've got USAA for our Auto and Renter's. I called them a few days ago asking for a quote on Homeowner's (with Flood included of course -- hellooooo, Florida?). Well, apparently they no longer "do" Florida policies (and even told me that they're going to be "zoning out" grandfathered-in Florida policies at that).
So the nice USAA General Agency CSR gave me a quote for one of their "partners," "Citizens." She even told me that Citizens has been in the news for bad press (didn't elaborate) but that wouldn't be something to "worry about." She quoted us, on a fairly new build (2004), without a pool and owning one dog, a whopping $2800/year. Once I recovered, I expressed my gratitude, hung up the phone, and had a stiff martini. Then another. And another.
Then, we talked to our Buyer's Agent (a really, really cool guy -- AWESOME!) and HE said that for the home we asked the quote on, $1300 would have been "about right." He is estimating roughly $2K on the house we've signed a purchase agreement for merely because it's an older build and has an in-ground pool AND a pool-house (for $231K).
Soooo, we're disillusioned with Citizens (and USAA a bit for pointing us in their direction). So who else is out there that's GOOD??? Can anyone PLEASE tell me?? We've got to get moving on lining up Homeowners! I am SO desperate!!
Any opinions? Please??!!

Thanks!!
