Re: Joint Checking Account Problem - PLEASE HELP!

$89 in the hole and he's trying to withdraw money with his bank card. Sheesh. Doesn't that just take the cake.

When I was about 7 years old, my Mom commented that she was low on cash. So I said why don't you just go to the bank machine and take some out. She then explained to me that you had to actually have money in the bank and that that cash in the machine was actually from her account. Not just a free gift.

Apparently your ex didn't get the same lesson I did.

I warped my children badly by referring to pulling money from an ATM as "printing some money." I always forget how literal kids are. Smiley Sad Took a while to undo that mess.

Re: Joint Checking Account Problem - PLEASE HELP!

Well, I went to the bank at lunch today and closed the account.  IT IS DONE!  He had accumulated a total of $125 in total fees (they charged him a daily overdraft fee for the whole week, so it went from $89 in fees to $125.  But, like I said it's done!  Again, I really want to thank you all for all your help in getting this taken care of!  Now, I can get on with my life and not have to worry about this hurting MY credit!

Re: Joint Checking Account Problem - PLEASE HELP!

Yes, but with his money.  His check for this week direct deposited, I paid the fees, and closed the account and have what's left sitting here waiting for him to pick up.

I hope you have considered having him sign a receipt for the monies.  While I don't know the particular situation, I'm firmly in the "better safe than sorry" camp.

Re: Joint Checking Account Problem - PLEASE HELP!

No, I didn't have him sign a receipt.  Never thought of it, but I'm not worried about it.  When I went to close the account last Friday, I told the manager that I would close it and give him his money, and he said what I did with the money was no business of theirs, I close the account and get what's left.  There is no way he can come back on me and say I didn't give him the money.  He was pissed when he came over tonight that I didn't just take my name off and leave the account open, I explained to him that I couldn't do that unless I showed a death certificate.  He's pissed because he does not have a valid drivers license, so he has no way to open another account or cash his checks now.  Not my problem anymore.  I told him to go get a state ID and open an account, but he's a typical lazy man (male readers of this exclused, of course) and doesn't know how and/or want to go through the hassle.  The whole reason I kept the account open for the last 2 years that we haven't really been together is because he couldn't open a new account and cash his check.  Well, too bad now.  I'm done with it and hopefully he is out of my life.

Re: Joint Checking Account Problem - PLEASE HELP!

Why would he need a driver's license? When I moved to the US, I used my US SS number and foreign passport.

If he doesn't have a license, perhaps he should look at getting one. A state ID would work. Passport would work.
