I learned to manage my finances a lot better, and I also learned to not overextend/sacrifice myself trying to bail out family. I have better control now, and while I still have some bad habits (still eat out too much rather than buying groceries and cooking for myself), I still always PIF, but I still run up my cards a bit with takeout. Other than that, I'm doing far better. Plus, I try to put away a bit into savings every month now, too. I didn't do that before, partially because I didn't really have any money left over to do so, but even when I did have a little extra, I still didn't. Now I make it a point to put aside some money, even if it's just a few hundred dollars a month.
Great job!
I'm still not able to put aside any money for savings yet, as whatever "leftover" money I have each month goes towards paying the cards down - I'm slowly making progress there and plan to have them all paid completely off and able to start setting aside savings in the next 6 months.
Thats true, I should probably do that, however my thinking is that those delinquent accounts (have some unpaid COs/1 collection still that I'm paying on) are already delinquent and aren't going anywhere/increasing with interest, so I'll keep making my scheduled payments while paying myself a bit by putting aside some in savings every month. I'd like to have a decent-sized "rainy day" fund for emergencies.
I can relate. I used to only use debit and lived by the old "If I can't pay for it in cash, I shouldn't be charging it" rule. I didn't think about 0% APR and rewards points. I really started thinking about the benefits when I was trying to save and budget. Now, I only use debit specifically on accounts that offer cashback. Otherwise, I charge it and ONLY charge what I know I can pay back the following month.
I still use a debit (I hate debt) card for nearly all purchases. My trusty credit union card goes with me virtually everywhere. It earns 0.10¢ back per transaction.
