I was just thinking about this earlier this day as I was depositing all my cash from my wallet to my bank. Teller: How much are you depositing today? Me: (*takes out all cash, saves $50, counts it.*) Uhmm, 80 dollars? wait, you know what, take this all (hands $130). I thought to myself, "who still carries cash anyway?".
Well, I know a lot of people do, but I stopped using cash for years. I only really leave a couple of multiple $5 bills for tipping the people who cut my hair. Even that is optional, but I just think they like that better.
I even opened up a Schwab checking account just for the mere fact that I can just take their ATM debit card instead of carrying cash when traveling abroad (they offer unlimited ATM fee reimbursement, internationally).
Plus, I absolutely adore my minimalist wallet.

Since I primarily use 2 credit cards for everything, AMEX BCP and Citi DC (and sometimes Target MC), I rarely (if ever) use cash (but my wife does).
For the new year, I am thinking of going completely cashless and just using cards.
I also don't pay for anything with my phone and do not want to.
I am curious about how many others do not carry ANY cash and do not pay with iphone apps, and whether this has proved to be a problem in any meaningful way. What is the worst that has ever happened with you?
My wife thinks that I should carry at least $20, but I really prefer to keep my wallet (Bellroy Slim Sleeve) as thin as possible.
This is, I admit, a little off-topic, but please share your thoughts/experiences.
Happy Holidays, by the way !!
I don't usually carry cash OR cards - I'm all in on Apple Pay when I can. Many days I leave the house with no wallet at all, or a single card. That said, both are still absolutely needed, even in 2020 as these are my blockers:
1. Cash - one of my preferred local diners and Italian restaurants nearby both are cash-only. If I want to partake in their deliciousness, I better bring the Benjamins (or Jacksons, as the case may be).
2. Card - some restaurants don't have the pay-at-table mobile devices yet, so they still need to run a card. Guess I shouldn't be surprised given there's some restaurants that still don't even take card. There's a few bigger places that still don't do mobile pay either. Seriously Chipotle, how can YOU still not take Apple Pay in 2019?
There is also one big pro to not carrying cash: I'm not lying when I tell the "homeless" beggars that I have no spare change or cash. Most of them around here see me enough now to know to stop asking anyway, but it's still a nice hedge to have. I'm waiting for the day when I'm like "sorry pal, no cash" and one of them says "that's ok, I have Square now" in response.
I frequent probably a dozen places that are cash only. Knowing I'm visiting one usually prompts me to grab $100-$200 out of the ATM if I'm on empty.
I otherwise use cards/Apple pay everywhere.
I was a late adopter to Apple pay, but it's legit amazing. Especially now that chip cards take so long to read/approve. Folks that have mentioned they don't want to use it should seriously reconsider IMO.

ApplePay must be really quick if its faster than chip. When I use chip, I don't even look away anymore because in no time it says to remove card. I used to order a pizza on my phone, eat it, and then remove my card before, and it would let out a sound as if I gave a wrong answer on a TV game show if I didn't take it out fast enough.

A total transaction time on Apple Pay of 1-2 seconds is typical.

That's pretty fast.
ApplePay is significantly faster than a chip, you also don't have to click as many buttons on the pin pad. On top of that, it is more secure.

Back in the day one local bank had an ATM called Fast Cashier. It was a novelty. People would line up to use it for fun. My dad and I were driving past one location when he remarked "look at the people standing in the rain waiting to play that machine and try to get some of their money back. Why did they put their whole paycheck in the bank to begin with?"
Obviously that was a bazillion years ago as people received paper pay checks, took them to the bank and got cash out from the human teller for walking around money. Bills were paid by personal checks.
I still smile when I see someone playing a machine trying to get their own money ![]()
I have not paid for anything with cash in 5 years. Maybe more. I do mostly use my cards but have been using Apple Pay wherever I can, even before the Apple card.
I went years without any cash on my person and I just so happened to have $20 on me from split the bill situation. I got stuck in a snow storm and although I have AAA it was nice to have $20 in cash to tip the tow truck driver. Since then keep a single $20 bill in my wallet. It has been there 2 years.
btw I also use a slim wallet; Secrid.
