Ding Ding Ding Ding! Right answer. Sorry, no prizes though. I was going to bring this up later on depending on others' responses, but I ask this all the time to strangers and friends I bump into. Nearly 99% of the time, each one says I'll take two weeks and go......to the beach, or to NYC, to Disney, to wherever. Point is, their response is always dependent on the two weeks they get at their job, is always domestic, and is almost always limited by their current income, even if their boss is paying for it (maybe their boss is broke).

As for DW and I, we would redo parts of our honeymoon. We took a cruise around Italy with a stop in Tunisia. There were some people who actually lived on that boat. That got us thinking too....we have to go on an around the world cruise and stop and visit every post of call. If we like a particular area, like Venice, then we would stay and wait for the next cruise ship to come by. That's the way to travel.

Re: Question on travel

A loaded question ?????? just kidding.

90% of the vacations I take are international and have been for many years.

You're right in that we're bound by 2 weeks in general due to our jobs.  I would even appreciate a day at the spa these days but if my boss were paying for my 2 week holiday then following  are my top 4 destinations:

- Kenya (a safari)
- New Zealand
- The Seychelles
- Turkey

I've traveled throughout the vast majority of the world but these are places I haven't been yet !

Re: Question on travel

I'm having a hard time imagining a situation where my employers would pay for me to go to these places, but off the top of my head:

- Tahiti and Bora Bora
- East Africa
- the Himalayas
- the Alaskan interior and North Slope, before the oil companies convince Washington that these areas must be destroyed, because the oil companies don't seem to be able to use their fabulous profits to get oil anywhere else
- the Tatras in Slovakia
- back to New Zealand (South Island)

hmmm, I seem to have a mountain theme going here!

Re: Question on travel

Yup, while it's unrealistic that any public employee will get giant travel perks, I do have to remember that out of 52 weeks a year I work about 37.  I could do a LOT of self-funded travel in those 15 off-weeks -- and I plan to!

Plans so far...

July 08 -- week in vegas
Oct 08 -- DC trip for work (okay so that doesn't count)
March 09 -- Cruise the Caribbean
June 09 -- Florida w/ the girls

Looks like I have about 12 more weeks to plan!  Smiley Happy

(Thanks for this thread, btw -- travelling has always been a big goal for once I got the finances straight!)
