I'm so glad they give a "pass" to "old people". I love my father dearly but he grew up during the depression and he always tips *can I really share this* *gulp* exactly one dollar. Doesn't matter if its a cup of coffee or a steak at a fancy restaurant. And it would really upset him if we added to it. So, I'd try to be discrete and find a reason to go back to the table but sometimes I couldn't. I'd just pray that the server would get a really great tipper right afterward to balance it out.
If service is OK to good I tip 20%, more if excellent. If using one of those two-for-one discount coupon books or similar deal my wife and I tip based on what the tab would have been without the special deal. In student days I worked in food service, as did my brother and my sister, so I know firsthand what it is like to work for tips!
