This is quite different from prohibition. This infringes upon my right to BREATHE. I sit in a non-smoking section of a restaurant, which is separated from the smoking section by what? Air? I hate smelling cigarette smoke whilst eating--it grosses me out. There are times that I come in the house and strip my outer layers to leave in the laundry room, don't want to pollute my bedroom.

I'm so glad they give a "pass" to "old people". I love my father dearly but he grew up during the depression and he always tips *can I really share this* *gulp* exactly one dollar. Doesn't matter if its a cup of coffee or a steak at a fancy restaurant. And it would really upset him if we added to it. So, I'd try to be discrete and find a reason to go back to the table but sometimes I couldn't. I'd just pray that the server would get a really great tipper right afterward to balance it out.

If service is OK to good I tip 20%, more if excellent.  If using one of those two-for-one discount coupon books or similar deal my wife and I tip based on what the tab would have been without the special deal.  In student days I worked in food service, as did my brother and my sister, so I know firsthand what it is like to work for tips!

I usually tip around 15 % on any service, unless the waiter or waitress where amazing and then it's 20% of more.

Since this thread has been resurrected... What is with tipping being based on a % anyway? The cost of the meal is not necessarily proportional to how difficult it was to serve.

We've been conditioned, my man. LOL. I remember thinking about this when I worked at a restaurant in high school.
