Guess it's my turn to vent! Why are people so cruel or just plain don't give a crap about their pets? I found a dachshund on the highway a week ago that was severely dehydrated, malnourished & flea ridden to the point he had no hair on his back and had a terrible infection from the fleas. I felt so sorry for this dog and didn't have the heart to drive on because I knew he wouldn't make it on this highway. I took him to my vet to have him scanned for a microchip and of course he didn't have one. My vet put him on 4 different medications and didn't charge me a dime. My vet seems to believe that the owners aren't making any effort to locate this dog because of the condition he was in when I found him.
Unfortunately we don't have a no kill shelter so I'm holding on to him until I either locate the owner or find him a suitable home. This has been a difficult process as well as I don't want to give him to just anyone and people are thinking I'm crazy because I want to see where he would be living, are there other pets... etc. I wish I could keep him because he is such a sweet & loving dog however between my dobie & a psycho cat it just isn't possible.
Ok I'm not finished venting... LOL As if this situation wasn't bad enough on my way home the other night a car stops a few hundred feet in front of me and tosses a kitten out the door! I get closer and the car passes me and I see something running in front of my car that was black (from the back you couldn't tell what it was) and about 5 inches in length. I stop my car and the black thing stops, turns toward my car. I get out of the car and it came running straight to me. This kitten wasn't even old enough to be weaned. So of course I pick it up take it home let my daughter feed & clean it. Saturday morning I took it to the animal shelter and was amazed at how many people were adopting kittens & dogs. I had to put this kitten down on the ground outside because it was making a mess all over me. I guy adopting a pitt bull came around the corner with this dog and says "look at the kitty"! The kitten of course freaked out and when I tried to pick it back up clawed & bit me so they confine it which makes his chances for adoption slim. I was in tears and couldn't even walk back inside to turn in the bite report. I was furious with this man for bringing this dog he was adopting to the kitten, furious with the a-hole that dumped him on the road and angry with myself for putting the little thing on the ground and yet happy the man was adopting a shelter dog rather than going out to pay hundreds of dollars for a dog. Talk about mixed emotions!!!
Which leads me to the next issue... I understand accidents happen... but how in the world can someone leave their pets on the road after being hit and killed by a car? Maybe I'm wrong to think this way but if you give your animals a proper home and supervision then they wouldn't end up on the highways dead! I know not everyone can afford a fenced in yard these day but a leash at the Dollar General store or Walmart cost less than $5.00! The responsibility don't end there, there are vet bills remember you bring these animal into your homes as a part of your family... you wouldn't leave your child on the highway or unattended! Not everyone can afford to have their pets spayed/neutered through a animal hospital but if people would check with their local animal shelters or department of environmental health there are discounted programs available to have pets spayed or neutered.
Again, I guess I just needed to vent and hope I haven't offended anyone.
Wow, you have gone through alot with the animals lately.
I don't know why you are wanting to find the owner of the dog. If they didn't take care of it before, I highly doubt they will do so now. You may want to try to find him/her a good home else where.
Bran, good for you doing all you're doing; I hope they find the owner so that (if an option in your state) they can be charged with animal cruelty (it's a felony here in AZ, thank goodness!).
I don't get it, either - but humans' inhumanity to other living creatures has always been incomprehensible to me.
Deep breath - try to focus on the good you're doing rather than on the horrors of others' actions. Kudos to your vet, too!!
Chin up. Those animals were abandoned near you for a reason - so someone with your heart and motivation to help would help them. Good for you. ![]()
You are truly a wonderful person. Ghandi said we will be judged by the way we treat our animals.
You will be rewarded. People just make me sick. I have a cat I rescued (his owner used to throw him up against the wall.) and another one from a guy that was being evicted.
They light up my life.
Do you know about www.animalrescuesite.com. You go online each day and click and sponsors give bowls of food for each click. It is free for you to do this and helps the ASPCA. Spread the word.
Stef I have taken into consideration that maybe this lil guy is just lost and may have been lost for weeks or months which may explain some of his condition. However I have made up my mind that if I was contacted by the true owner and they said he had been missing just a few days prior to my finding him that I would indeed tell them it wasn't their dog or turn them in for abusing him. I have been interviewing potential furever homes for him and some people get offended and don't appreciate when I question them about pets, children, living quarters etc.
On a lighter note.... I'm relieved I'm not trying to find a child a home because none would be good enough!!! No wonder it's so difficult for people to adopt children! Hat's off to the people that work in these career fields!!!
*Most* animals have an uncanny way of being able to find their way home when lost.
My father HATES cats and I was not allowed to have them while I was growing up. Well, that changed when we moved to a new town with a stable full of horses in tow and a new barn. Where there are barns, there tend to be rats! Dad spent quite a bit of money in the first few months buying poison and I thought he was joking one day when he asked me to hide the rat poison from the rats. They were actually getting into the extra boxes and eating it all, and of course they were not dying.
A few months go by and a stray mama cat came along and took over with 2 kittens. My father was furious and ready to go dump them somewhere, but of course I pouted enough he left them alone for the night. The next morning when we went out to do our chores, there were dead rats everywhere. Mama Kitty was a mouser and proved she could be useful. We got to keep them and Dad saved money on useless rat poison.
One of her babies died later, but the one that was left I soon got very attached to. He eventually made his way to being an indoor cat, although my Dad would toss him out on occassion, just to show me who the boss was.
My Dad has a really bad ulcer and problems eating at times, enough he would need to box up a meal when eating out and have to bring it home and try to eat it later. He brought home a steak and potatoes one day and left it out in his truck, with the windows rolled down. You can probably guess what happend. Yup, he sent me to go get it before the cats did and I was too late. He never forgave my kitty after that. He took him to work with him, 30 miles away (and across a bridge) I kept asking where my cat was and never got a straight answer. A week later I heard a pitiful meowing and went to the door and there he was. My Dad was hollering wanting to know just how the he!! he found his way back and over the bridge at that! I was upset with my Dad, but really amazed that this cat came all that way back.
I would like to say this story ends well, but... my cat would also sleep on the hood of my car and sometimes would get in the backseat and go to school with me.(I didn't realize he was there until I got to school most of the time) He always stayed inside until I could cut class and get him back home. Well, Dad used my car one night and swore he jumped off at the end of the driveway. He never came back. I think perhaps Dad took him over several bridges, just in case.
I never thought about it, but I never named this poor kitty and I had him for several years. I guess deep down, I knew I wouldn't be able to keep him and didn't want to get attached.
My Mom passed away and Dad remarried. Now, as punishment, my step-monster has 3 cats and they ALL sleep in the bed with them. One weighs 20lbs and sleeps right next to his head. Talk about paybacks! It's HER house and she has had those cats for wayyyyyy longer than she has been married to my Dad, so the cats get their way. I think it's funny he has to deal with this. Maybe he should have been nicer to mine.
Now he gets to breath cat fur all night.
Very sad, Bran.
All our animals are rescues, always have been since I was a little kid. And instead of paying a breeder for a purebred, we have rescued a purebred Australian Shepherd (5mo old, an abusive breeder was raided, from animal shelter), Beagle (2yrs old, most likely a trucker's dog that hopped outta the cab, from animal shelter), King Charles Cavalier Spaniel (8wks old, a family's 2 registered spaniels accidently mated & they put the offsping on craigslist)...
And for cats, two stray wild kittens on Guantanamo Bay (the best cats EVER!) and then a Momma + 2 kittens from craigslist (the Momma was handed between single Marines on deployments, til she got pg and then no one wanted her).
Right now we're looking for an English Bulldog to rescue, but our requirements are that it's good w/ other dogs, other cats, AND small children -- so far, no dice. Good for you for rescuing that puppy. And good for you for being stringent on rehoming it. No point in bringing a new family member home if it won't fit in with the current family!
Just got approved for adopting a cute little rescue beagle, Belle, from a no kill shelter in NoVa. Can't wait to bring her home! ![]()
The irresponsibility and stupidity of some people is mind bottling.
Hey Stef, I agree most animals have that uncanny way of finding their way home but so many don't make it because they get killed. I know & understand what your talking about with you father... my grandfather did the same thing when we were kids... take the cats and drop them off only to find the back home in a day or two. You hear so many storys on the news where pets are lost and are found months or years later thousands of miles away from home. Someone posted the poem below on craigs list....warning it will bring you to tears!
Congrats Ivy & Jaybird on your adoptions!
I adopted your dog today…
The one you left at the pound;
The one you had for ten years
And no longer wanted around.
I adopted your dog today…
Did you know that he’s lost weight?
Did you know he’s scared and depressed
And seems to have lost all faith?
I adopted your dog today…
He had fleas and a little cold;
Guess you don’t care what shape he’s in
— You abandoned him I am told.
I adopted your dog today…
Were you having a baby or moving away?
Did you suddenly develop allergies,
Or was there NO reason he couldn’t stay?
I adopted your dog today…
He doesn’t play or even eat much;
I guess he’s very sad inside and
It’ll take time for him to trust.
I adopted your dog today…
And here he is going to stay;
He’s found his FOREVER home
And a warm bed in which to lay.
I adopted your dog today…
And shall give him all that he will need
— Patience, love, and security,
So he can forget your selfish deed.
