Consolidate 2 Fedloan loans?

I have 2 student loans with fedloan. My credit report shows a total of 3 installment loans (1. Fedloan, 2. Fedloan, 3. Nissan (my car lease)

My credit site is stating that one of the things that may be hurting my credit report is having 3 or more installment loans. I am able to consolidate the 2 Fedloan loans (the rate would be the same)

Thus, my credit would only show 2 installment loans, as opposed to "3 or more"

Is it worth it to consolidate my 2 Fedloan student loans? Together they total an average of $4,000, and I believe my 2.5% interest rate would not change.

Re: Consolidate 2 Fedloan loans?

It won't matter, you will then just be adding a brand new trade line which will actually bring your score down because of the lower AAOA. 2.5% on a student loan is GREAT! I say keep it how you are now and continue to pay it off. Even after these accounts are closed they will still show on your credit report for unto 10 years. (which is a + if you have all on time payments)

Re: Consolidate 2 Fedloan loans?

What Luscher said is spot on.  The effect of having a specific number of installment loans on your credit is likely very small, especially when compared with more important factors like payment history, the age of your accounts, credit mix and utilization.  I would leave your loans as is - the only real benefits to consolidation are convenience and it may even have a negative impact on your credit in the short term.

Instead, start reading the rest of these forums and look at other ways to improve your credit while you continue to build good payment history with your student loans.
