When I was in college I got a private student loan through AES/Chase with my husband as a co-signer. Payments came due while I was still in college and I did not know it was time to start paying because we had moved and I did not get their letters. They sent me to one of their collection agencys and I started to make payments, that place then sold me to another one. I made payments with them for a year when my husband became temporarily disabled and I called them up and asked if I could make a payment 2 weeks late and then when it went late they charged it off.
Chase then took back the account and I have been paying $200 a month for 4 years (between all the places). I call Chase every 3 months and set up payments for the next 3 months. I have never had a problem and now they are telling me sorry you need to take out a loan and pay us off, we can't take anymore payments because you have been paying too long and too little. Both our credit reports say: Closed - Derogatory and Latest Status: Collection/Charge-Off. I laughed and told the lady that I can't get a loan because they ruined my credit by charging me off when I asked for help.
So what are my options now? I know it won't hurt my credit anymore but I have been trying so hard to fix our credit and get balances down so we can buy a house. Are they going to sue my husband? I don't need a garnishment on his record. I left a message for someone else there. Help!
