Duplicate Reporting/Double Jeopardy? Discover Student Loans

Hi, new here. Learned alot lurking and I figured I'd ask what do. I've noticed a few strange things on my report which I need straightened out.

Backstory: Many of you have probably experienced the dreaded transfer of your Citibank Student Loans to other servicers such as Discover. Citibank decided to keep all my private loans except 1 which they sold to Discover in late October 2012 (which I didn't know until February 2013). My Federal Loans went to Sallie Mae aka Navient (still on deferment). I continually paid Citibank whatever my minimum was at the time. When I called Discover, the rep admitted they tried contacting me but when we reviewed my contact information it was incorrect. I paid the past due balance during the call and have been paying on time ever since (4 years now). Which leads me to my issue...

Issue: I want to get a mortage loan but my Discover shows record of being 120 days late. To make matters worse, another company named "SLC Student Loan Trust" is reporting me also as 120 days late for the same loan (same balance, terms, time period, etc). I'm basically getting dinged about 8x for missed payments. The balances aren't 0...I'm still in repayment. The funny thing is, I see SLC listed on other loans in my CR marked "closed/transferred" (no negative reporting). I'm not sure if Citibank passed these loans to them first and then it was transferred again yet this one stayed open? I have disputed this over and over online but Equifax would come back "dispute resolved, customer disagrees." What is strange is on my Equifax, both these servicers appear. On Experian, it only lists SLC and on TransUnion, it only lists Discover. I noticed that when I disputed SLC on EQ, they changed the balance and the same exact update appeared on the Discover account on TU. TU's Discover account also oddly pushed back my missed payments to show Feb 2013 was 120 late which is inaccurate. EQ's Discover account stayed the same.

Resolution Methods: I called Discover, mailed and uploaded a goodwill request on their secure message online asking to remove these late fees. I sort of had luck after emailing the CEO. My email was forwarded to another EO who emailed me saying the debt is valid. I called and spoke the person in EO and they said they can't remove my lateness since they must "report accurately" so I brought up these strange occurrences. I received confirmation that Discover is NOT the same company as SLC. The office will investigate and give me a response next week. Something is fishy and I hope this ends up in them removing the lates altogether because truthfully I would have no way of knowing who really is my servicer. If they aren't linked, why are dates and balances changing after my dispute on both ends (and not even across the board with all 3 bureaus)? And if they are separate companies, can I be reported late if Discover didn't have the loan yet during those times?

I wish I could share screenshots so you guys can compare... I hit dispute on Equifax again before I spoke to the EO. Kind of want to know if EQ even took my claim seriously and investigated properly in the past...do I send a MOV? Is there another way I can tackle this? Thanks

Bump. Any suggestions? Person from Discover's EO called me back today and needs more time to investigate. I would have expected them to remove these lates as a courtesy considering they are still trying to figure this out.

Re: Duplicate Reporting/Double Jeopardy? Discover Student Loans

Bump, Help please. Should I file a CFPB complaint against EQ or the Creditors?

When I last spoke to the Discover EO, they admitted there is duplicate reporting going on and they are still working in it. I haven't heard back from them yet and I don't need them taking time to get their ducks in a row if there is a violation.

How would a OC correct this? Would they be able to delete their duplicate account and change the Discover name on my TU to SLC to make it look like 1 creditor across the board?

Re: Duplicate Reporting/Double Jeopardy? Discover Student Loans

Just throwing my experience out there... I had 4 student loans through Citibank, two which they kept and two they sold to Discover. My two still owned by Citibank are reporting as such on all 3 bureaus. The two owned by Discover all report as SLC Student Loan Trust. Oddly enough, last month on my Equifax report the Citibank loans are showing Closed but I still pay on all 4. Either way, not much help here but just wanted to chime in that SLC is the trust that Discover put all the Citibank loans in. Makes sense considering Discover is in Salt Lake City.

Yes and they have the same salt city location but its weird because all those SLC loans were closed on my CR with no payment history and marked transferred except this one. Someone messed up somewhere. And on top of that Discover EO is clueless because I asked twice if they are the same company and they said no and they thought this company was mimicking them smh

Re: Duplicate Reporting/Double Jeopardy? Discover Student Loans

Update: Small victories...still waiting for final decision.

My CFPB complaint was sent to EQ

The duplicate SLC Loan acct was removed from my mom's EQ CR so its only showing Discover now. And on her TU, the linked Discover acct isn't reporting anything on the month the 120 lateness was showing (wish I made it clearer that for deletion for all the latenesses adding up to 120 days, not just removing the 120 lateness lol...she has 1 60 day still showing). I'll wait for the official updates to see what changes happen to my CR.

Re: Duplicate Reporting/Double Jeopardy? Discover Student Loans

Update: EQ response on my CFPB complaint came back as no duplicate reporting AFTER SLC removed all their accounts across the 3 CRAs. Discover EO also sent a letter admitting there was duplicate reporting and that account was removed.

Now I only have Discover showing on my EQ 😬
