@BungalowMo wrote:This is an interesting topic. Even with the issues that I, personally, am experiencing with baddies associated with Sallie Mae & the Dep of Ed...when I signed those papers, I knew I was saying:
YES...I WILL PAY YOU BACK!!!
While I may not have understood all the whens & hows...I knew I was borrowing money. And I was raised to believe that my word was my honor.
True, but you were still a *kid* ... and I don't think kids understand all the gobbledy-**bleep** about interest rates, terms, penalties, etc. Plus, I think that with how competitive the job market is once you *do* graduate, and the stress of living on your own, being responsible for your own life (and grades) AND making sure that you do well in school ... I think it's tough enough that all the average college student focuses on IS their education -- not necessarily paying it back.
I think the average college student *does* need a special class on financial aid. For that matter, I kinda think people need classes on how to be a good parent before they have a baby. :/
My point was more to the people who just ... don't give a crap. People who really don't *care* about consequences. And there's more out there than you think. Take it from me, I live in the middle of fricking College Spring Break Central (Panama City Beach).
I have stories of college kids that just don't care. And if you've seen what *I've* seen, you'd easily come to the conclusion that those college kids that don't care will more than likely, barring some life-changing event, become adults that don't care.
Seriously, you want scary College-kids-outta-control-on-Spring-Break stories, I got'em. It's gotten so bad here with the crazy ones that our town (who's far more money-grubbing and greedy than Donald Trump) is talking about *banning* college kids at Spring Break time. They've already made it so you have to be 25 to rent a hotel room.
And we get most of our tourism revenue (which is nice and keeps *us* from paying state taxes) from the college kids and their daddy's credit cards.
