As I was reviewing my reports, I noticed that 10 accounts are missing from Experian. These accounts were back in 2009, US Department of Education. From what I can remember, my student loans went into default 2010/2011. I contacted them in 2012 and began the process of rehabbing them after nine months I successfully completed the program. Since the rehab they’ve either been in a repayment plan or deferred.
A couple months ago I noticed my Experian score was falling behind I just chalked it up as I was placed in some sort of bucket. Today I decided to pull my reports from Credit Check Total and noticed that both Transunion and Equifax have an AAoA of 2.3 years with the oldest account being 6.1 years old. On Experian it shows my AAoA as 1.7 years with the oldest account being 6.1 years old. Is there something I can do or should I just let it be. Is this something that happens when student loans go into default? My current scores are Experian (713), Transunion (738), and Equifax (728). Thanks in advance!
Once you rehab your loans the original tradeline (the one that defaulted) should be marked paid in full and any remarks relating the default should be removed. Some lenders will entirely remove this tradeline, or scrub it clean of the lates, but not all do. Any collection account related to the defaulted loan should also be removed from your credit once rehab is complete.
When the loan is transferred to a new servicer, they should put a new tradeline on your report for the new loan. It should be backdated to the original open date of the loan and reflect all of your payments toward the loan going forward.
Which tradeline has disappeared from your report? If it's the old, defaulted one with the lates that led to the default, you want it gone, even if it drops the AAoA, getting rid of those lates is a good thing. If it's the new one, you may want to contact your servicer and see why they aren't reporting your active loan to all three CRAs.
I had the same issue go on when US department of Education was servicing my loans. I actually went and disputed the credit information on file for it to valide and it ended up being corrected from that dispute. Hope this info helps.
