Hi everyone,
I'm currently working on a goodwill adjustment request with Nelnet and wanted to get your thoughts or guidance—especially if anyone has dealt with similar military repayment issues.
⚠️ Background:
I’m actively serving in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.
I was participating in the DoD Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP) and believed my loans were being handled by the Guard through that program.
Unfortunately, during early 2025, several 120-day late payments were reported on my Nelnet student loans across all three credit bureaus.
📄 What I’ve Submitted:
To support my goodwill request, I sent Nelnet the following:
DD Form 2475 (official SLRP repayment form)
EAP Statement of Understanding from the Guard
Drill Calendar showing active service during the reported late periods
I also emailed a full summary to Nelnet’s ombudsman office and received a voicemail response, but haven’t been able to speak to them directly yet.
✅ Account Status:
The loans are now current.
I’ve never had any other major credit issues—no collections, no charge-offs.
I opened a new Capital One credit card recently and am keeping utilization low.
🧠 What I’m Asking:
Has anyone here:
Successfully had late payments removed by Nelnet through the ombudsman?
Gone through a similar process involving military loan repayment confusion (SLRP or EAP)?
Had to escalate to the FSA Ombudsman or CFPB as a next step?
Also curious how long it typically takes after submitting all this to hear back with a decision.
Any advice, strategy tips, or experiences would mean a lot — especially from anyone who's navigated this with Nelnet or another servicer.
Thanks in advance!
