It's a hard pull. You might end up with some soft inquiries once the banks realize you're in the market. But it will be a hard inquiry when you apply for loans that are credit based.
Can't speak to best banks . . . There can be benefits for using who the school recommends, and auto-payments, but eventually you'll just have to compare.
