Student Loan Transfer

I have a family friend who was generous enough to put himself up as guarantor for my student loans when I was in college and I needed someone to do that since I was came from outside the country.  Now his kids are about to go to college, but he is having a hard time securing loans for them, since he still has mine on his credit.  I wanted to know what the best way to transfer the loan to my name would be so that the poor guy can go on with his life.

A little clarification: I've been told to use Direct Loans, but are there any others?  My wife is in the military, can I get a better loan that way?

These are more than likely private loans which Direct Loans will not touch. Unless there was a cosginor release in your prom note, he cannot be dropped and right now it is almost impossible to refi a private loan.
