$64 increase..lost 4 points, but paid a card down to 1% utilization and gained 0 points

I just don't understand Fico sometimes. I spent a litte on a card and had a $64 increase, which cost me 4 points. Then paid another card down to only 1% utilization and no increase. Grrrr!!!

Re: $64 increase..lost 4 points, but paid a card down to 1% utilization and gained 0 points

Hi Wendy!  Glad you are hear on the forums.

The folks here would need to know more before we could offer any insight.

For example, if your $64 increase on one card was an increase from $0 to $64, that might well cost you 4 points, since FICO likes seeing lots of $0 balances on credit cards (though FICO also likes it when at least one card reports a positive balance).

If the $64 increase caused your total utilization to cross over some significant breakpoint, that could have also caused a score drop (e.g. 8.9% to 9.2%). 9.000% is one such breakpoint.

Likewise if your individual utilization on one card went from (say) 28% to 1%, that would almost certainly not cause your utilization to change, so the fact that you got no boost is not surprising.  (We would definitely expect a score boost if your total utilization went from 28% to 1%.)

There's a whole other reason that the messages you are getting from your credit monitoring system may mislead you.  And that's because you are likely thinking that they are explanations of why your score just changed.  If we are talking about the myFICO "alerts", they do not do that at all.  Again, that surprises most people when they discover it, but that's actually true.  They do not explain why your score just changed -- they explain why FICO has pulled your score again.  Your score might have changed for some other reason, perhaps many times, in the weeks before but your are now only finding out about it now.  I can tell you more how that "alert" system works if you like.

The good news in all this is that the rules for how to get the most scoring points from your credit cards are actually very simple, so simple that if you follow them you won't need to constantly follow what your scores are.  Again, let us know if you want a further explanation.

I am a subscriber to MyFico and have found it extremely valuable for my rebuilding and understanding of how FICO scores work.  Rarely does a day go by that I don't get an alert for a balance change on an account, some result in no change at all, some result in changes that make no sense.  I have learned to take a longer view on my scores and accept that there are times where I do the right thing but my scores take a hit anyway or I pay on an account that my wife is an AU on , she gets 10 points and I get nothing.  I look at my scores just once a month and don't get worried about little shifts.
