The score increase must have come from something else.
Closing a card and increasing your utilization slightly (not crossing any thresholds) wouldn't be the cause of a 35 point FICO score increase.

I recently went on a card-closing spree, and the first one finally hit one of my reports. It was a credit card with $0 balance and $5500 CL, and my EX FICO8 jumped 35 points to 805. With this change, I have $126,775 available on revolving credit accounts, with a utilization of 17.13% (up from 16.42%).
Why such a huge leap when I made a change that INCREASED my rate of utilization?
Like @Anonymous I don't think that change was what caused the score increase.

I also removed myself as AU on an account that was just below 90% util at the time.
That change could definitely result in a solid FICO score increase.
