OP, you are on the right track. Keep sending the GWs. Some creditors will mark your TL in dispute if you send a GW letter, so asking the CRA to remove the comment would be a waste, IMO. About 2-3 months prior to mortgage time, I would stop any GW activity and contact the CRAs asking for the comment removal.

Thats exactly where I am at. I sent a GW letter at the end of January and I have heard nothing from them so I am going to assume nothing is going to happen. So at this point my wife and I are going for preapproval next week that I will call the CRA and ask them to remove the comment for mortgage reasons. When i ask them to do this should I request that they send me in writing that they will remove the comments?

I've never requested that before. I think a phone call might clear it up [with the CRA].  Assume the comment will be an issue, but in the end it may not be. DW and I closed 2-3 weeks ago and had two older (6-7 yr. old) TLs with that comment on it. One comment appeared after sending GWs and the other never cleared after a dispute. When going through my docs (FHA loan), there was a clause in there that said I cannot have any disputes reporting or accounts in dispute. I read of others' issues with that comment and their lender. After talking to the loan processor, she said that she never had an issue where someone was denied at her bank for one of those comments so I never messed with clearing that. The topic was never brought up again and I let it be. Maybe the age of the TL was a factor. I dunno.
