No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
For whatever it is worth, here are my thoughts and advice:
* With the new Williams-Sonoma store card, you will have 7 cards total.
* All you really need as far as a long term building plan is three cards. Five cards would be more than enough.
* Therefore you should close any cards that might involve fees. That sounds like it would be the C1 and 1st P. You will then have five.
* I would stay in the garden for a long time. Your signature suggests you plan to apply again for cards in Aug/Sept (you say garden till Aug) and that may be much sooner than you need to. There is no scoring advantage to you applying for more cards -- it can only hurt your score.
* That said, you will naturally want to migrate your current portfolio toward having major credit cards and very few store cards. To do that does involving applying for cards of course -- so I am not saying never apply again. Just wait for a while.
* My advice is to find a low cost method of tracking your three FICO 8 (classic) scores. The $1 trial at Credit Check Total is a good option. Personally I think the myFICO Ultimate package ($40/mo!) is a bad fit for someone just starting out, since it is so expensive. Also the free EX score and report at creditscore.com is a great option for anyone.
* Monitor your scores during the period of July-Oct. If you find that they have improved a lot, then circle back with people in the CC forum for advice about a good major credit card with no annual fee to apply for. Wait in the garden until all scores are high enough.
* Then apply for a decent major CC, allow your scores to sink and then slowly recover. Then when they are at least as high as before, apply for another. No reason not to close crummy store cards you don't like, but always try to have five open cards (five is plenty).
Great advice. I will contact Credit One on Monday and try to close it since it will not hurt my score. I appreciate the advice...thanks
