Re: FICO Causes and Effects (What Happened, and How Did it Affect Your FICO?)

6.  It doesn't seem to carry forward old non-paid debts after a while.  Thus if someone doesn't pay off old debts they are not penalized (e.g., after 7 or ten years).  How's that fair to us who haven't ever been late over the same time period (say 10 years plus)?

Actually the FCRA is what allows negative information to be removed after 7 or 10 years based on what it was.

FICO only deals with information that is on your report.

You wont find too many people here who will suport you views on the FCRA

Let me count the ways where I think the scoring is bogus:
1. It doesn't account for your salary, net worth, or percentage of debt. You better believe that a lender takes these items into consideration.
2. It doesn't account for taking out a zero percent CC loan & putting it to use earning interest. So, if you want to use other people's money to make money, that's a bad thing?
3. It doesn't account for paying off a CC balance every month & getting a 1-3% kick back on purchases. Again, making money by charging, that's bad?
4. It counts the fact that you've had 50 accounts over 40 years, all paid on time. So what? If you get a discount on purchases when you open an account & pay it off, then close it, that's bad?
5. It counts enquiries. What's that got to do with your ability to pay off loans? Absolutely nothing!
6. It doesn't seem to carry forward old non-paid debts after a while. Thus if someone doesn't pay off old debts they are not penalized (e.g., after 7 or ten years). How's that fair to us who haven't ever been late over the same time period (say 10 years plus)?
I have other reasons, but I can't remember them all (having a senior moment)...
Anyone want to chime in?

It is no more bogus then any other statistical measure. There is an excellent correlation between the credit score and the probability to default on a loan. Just like with any other statistics there will be outliers, but if you are in the business of lending money - you care about the law of averages, and using the credit score is an excellent, and cheap tool to select your customers. Yeah, you will miss few - but trying to figure out who, among the funky few are going to be good is not worth your time or money.

Re: FICO Causes and Effects (What Happened, and How Did it Affect Your FICO?)

It's not about you specific. It's the law of averages. The scores are based on actions people do as a group. You will not reach the highest score because you are the most responsible. Your highest score will be reached by finding others in your group and doing what they do since as a whole this group defaults the least = higher scores. There will always be a few in each group that is totally scored wrongly. This is not based on an individual. One more comment for the "income matters". Income is not a factor at all. Income is only a factor when determining how much $$ to lend, not responsibility. Just because someone has money to pay back debt doesn't mean they will choose to. Lets face it, there is a lot of unpaid debt by "choice" and this is not just an opinion, this is a fact. Some people want to buy stuff and say, ehh I will just pay the debt later and then later they say, what's the point it's been so long. I have personally seen it from bottom income and "mid" six figure incomes.

Oh yeah, it's only going to get better from here on out. Was this your last or only PR? Do you have any CA's left on your reports? Do you have ScoreWatch? Did you get an alert? (although if you pulled too quickly, you won't get an alert.)

Thanks Tim & HTSU.

HTSU- This was my only PR. Yes still have 1 CA and 1 OC reporting. They are due to be purged this spring-summer. When they are gone I'll have a clean/green report. No, don't have scorewatch.

Re: FICO Causes and Effects (What Happened, and How Did it Affect Your FICO?)

Interesting logic. Was 778. One credit card reported $145 balance. Score dropped 8 points. Opened a car loan for $52000 on a new M-Benz - they had 1.9% promotion, score increased 10 points to 780. So it is worse to have $145 balance on a credit card with a 20K limit, then a fresh $52K car loan. (query for the loan went to TransUnion though, thus not reflected)

Re: FICO Causes and Effects (What Happened, and How Did it Affect Your FICO?)

Hello, I have two questions regarding the effect to my FICO scores which are all in the low to mid 600 range. First, I need to get a new car and have a relatively short credit history (nine years). Would applying for a loan with a cosigner increase my chances of being approved for a loan (I make ok money 60+) and no debt issues. Second, would increasing my credit limit on my Orchard Bank card (secured card) from the current amount help in increasing my scores? Overall, I pay all my bills on time (when I receive the bill) and am actively trying to improve my scores/CR. Please help. Thanks!
