I have a question about how my BT will affect my scores once it starts reporting. My only card was Capital One that was at 1300/4300 uti. After some gardening I apped for NFCU and was approved for a SL of 25,000 (crazy I know). Anyway, I did the BT and my scores increased today (see sig below) because Cap One reported the payment. So the increase is because "the scores on one of your accounts has decreased by 1311."
My question is will my scores fall again once the new NFCU cc eventually reports that I have that same balance with them now? Does the increased credit line have any affect on how account balances are scored?
Hi Shakiraa, congrats on that NFCU approval - nice work!!
Nope, you'll be fine. Your util will remain super low so that balance won't affect you... here's how you figure that out..
Before NFCU:
Total CL: 4300
Balance: 1300
Util: 30.2% (1300 / 4300) *This percentage accounted for both your aggregate and individual util. since you only had the one card.
After NFCU:
Total CL: $29.3K
Total Balance: 1300 *Assuming Cap One remains at $0.
Aggregate Util: 4.43% (1300 / 29300)
Individual Util: 5.2% (1300 / 25000)
So... as you can see, your agreggate and individual util will remain quite low even with the BT... Scores are affected by util when it rises above or falls below the following thresholds: 8.9%, 28.9%, 48.9%, 68.9%, 88.9%. So, as long as you keep your util below the ideal 8.9% aggregate and below 28.9% individual... your scores will be fine.
Enjoy your new card!

Is that NFCU your only card now?
No, I plan to keep the Cap One card open since I've had it for 7 years and just putting a small subscription on it monthly. Keeping uti well below 28.9% going forward.

This is immensely helpful! Thank you for the breakdown.

In my opinion, no. When you were at 30.5% individual card utilization with Capital One you were getting a slight penalty for being at 30% or more. With NFCU you're going to be at 5%, which is lovely.
