Hey, don't despair.

Not all hard inquiries are in the same category.  For example, credit/store card hard pulls are the most damaging.  So, even though you see a hard pull that doesn't mean it's like getting a hard pull from, say, Kohl's or something like that.

I got a hard pull when I bought my car with cash.  Go figure.  But it's not the same impact as a hard pull for an auto loan.  Just rather shocking to the system when you first see it.

So, not all hard pulls are created equal - not even close.

I don't understand. First, why would anybody have to pull a credit report if you're not applying for credit? Second, how is it not the "same impact". If an auto dealer pulls your credit and it shows as a hard pull, how does FICO, the CRAs or other creditors distinguish it was not for a potential auto loan? To me, a hard pull is a hard pull is a hard pull... Please clarify. Thanks.

Re: Hard Pull from Avis

I too received a hard pull from Avis (actually renting through Budget since they had a better rate, same company though).  I only have one other inquiry in the last 2 years for an auto loan.  Is it worth disputing so it shows up as soft?  From the previous replies in this thread, it seems it's not because FICO is seeing within a certain category.  But the way I see it, it's not a request for a line of credit so it shouldn't appear.  I don't need anything bringing my score down right now (trying to obtain a mortgage).  Any thoughts?

It is a request for a loan, instead of lending you X dollars cash they are lending you a physical asset in the form of a car worth X dollars.

Well, it's a good thing I'm on a diet, because I'm now eatin' a BIG plate of crow!

Evidently, my understanding is incorrect and all hard inquiries are scored the same.  Sorry for posting the misinfo!

And I was so dang excited for a day or two - thinkin' that darn hard pull was something less than it is ;( !

Re: Hard Pull from Avis

Well they cannot pull your credit without you giving them all the needed info to do so, and clearly you gave them what they needed.

If you do not have a CC, they have to make sure they are not going to get screwed someway!
