How Important is accounts with balances ?

Hello Everyone,

I recently did an experiment going from 7 accts with balances to 6, on the estimator 5 to 6 and 7 to 8 seem to be two of the buckets. The only change to my score was my FICO 8 Bankcard which went up 2 points across all agencies. I was wondering if anyone has some data points showing how important really accounts with balances is on FICO 8 and 9.

For some context I have 19 accts on Experian, 18 on TU and 15 on EQ. Scores are 755, 759 and 768 respectively.

My understanding is that it is based on % and you see the biggest effect when below 25% for FICO8 scores (there is some debate on if the % is 33 or 25)

@dragontears

I've also watched that if we have more than 2 accounts with balances can trigger the *too many accts with balances* penalty. That's why AZEO is recommended (All zero except one).

In my experience they're not important at all in the FICO 8's and 9's.

There was a time when I was under the misapprehension that it was best to report a balance on as many cards as possible, so I had each of my cards report a $25 balance. It didn't affect my FICO 8's or 9's at all.

I believe the mortgage scores are the ones that take that factor into account in a major way.
