Improving my score

My score is very low and I need to increase it drastically. i thought the purchase of my new home and car would help but it has not. My score is still borderline 600 among the three agencies. What can I do to fix this? I had a 2-3 credit cards in college that i maxed out but that was 8+ years ago. i thought it would fall off by now. I also have one collection that I am slower paying off through my job. Any advise would be very helpful? I was considering getting a secured card but someone told me that apply for new credit would hurt my score? Also does disputing affect your score?

Re: Improving my score

I would say to get a secured card to start building up credit. It will hurt your score for the first few months. But then as it starts to get older it will help out your score more than it hurt your score in the beginning. I would say it is worth it.
