I purchased a new car on Friday, and very early Saturday morning I pulled my 3 reports via Amex's Credit Secure and saw just one inquiry from the Acura dealer on Equifax. So I thought the damage was done and I was getting away with just a single HP. Now this morning I pulled my 3 reports again via Credit Secure (I'm a daily puller for the time being) and I see a new inquiry that was pulled yesterday from American Honda Finance. Is this typical? Why couldn't Honda Finance use the credit report that the Acura dealer pulled the day before?
I guess it shouldn't really matter anyway since they are both for auto loans and should count as just 1 inquiry for FICO scoring purposes. However, while the inquiry from the Acura dealer is labeled as "Automobile Dealers, New", the inquiry from American Honda Finance is labeled as "Personal Loans Cos." Will that label/coding still allow this second inquiry to be counted as an auto loan inquiry?
One other thing - I received my weekly MyFico ScoreWatch email this morning indicating that there were no ScoreWatch alerts this week. How can that be when there were two HPs on my Equifax for two consecutive days prior to this email? Doesn't make any sense.
If you applied at the dealer, as opposed to a bank or CU directly, the dealer will pull from several different lenders at the same time. It's normal. Honda doesn't have access to the Acura report and vice-versa.
There's internal coding we can't see. Look at your FICO report from myFICO to know for sure.
If the inquiries just appeared, give it a day or two before receiving any alert for any EQ inquiry. So if the inquiry date was yesterday, look for it today or tomorrow.
Thanks for the quick response, llecs! That all makes sense. I guess it could have been a lot worse if the dealer had shopped for loans at various other lenders. I was pretty upfront and adamant about getting Acura's advertised rate of 0.9%. I told them I would not buy the car unless I got that promo rate. So taking 2 HPs for that rate is definitely well worth it.
And I guess I just need to have a little more patience where ScoreWatch is concerned. Hopefully I'll get an alert later today or tomorrow.
Thanks again!
Acura/Honda are the same from the financing perspective (same company, co-branded); however, I believe there's a difference in the dealership pull and then they shop it around which includes the captive lender in this case.
UpNComing would know for sure if you tried on the auto loans forum.

Just as a follow-up - after still never receiving a ScoreWatch alert for the two inquiries (one inquiry on 8/31 and the other on 9/1), I decided to go ahead and pay the roughly $14.00 for an updated Equifax report from MyFico. The two inquiries are clearly visible on my report, but my score is unchanged at 754. Because my score did not change from the 2 inquiries, is that why ScoreWatch did not alert me?
For some reason, I was thinking that any sort of inquiry or new account would trigger an alert, regardless if my score changed or not.
