Not all inquiries count?

When I view the "factors" that affect my score on Experian it tells me that one thing is I have been "seeking credit" and notes that I have 5 inquiries.

Except... I have six listed on the reports section of their site, all within the past year.

My guess is that they are only counting 5 of the 6 inquiries, and the reason why is that one of them was the credit check my landlord did when I rented my apartment. The others are credit card inquiries and I bet those are the 5 that they are counting.

Anyone else seen this?

Re: Not all inquiries count?

FICO scoring is supposed to only take into account inquiries that are the result of an application for credit by you, so-called "hard pulls." Creditors are interested in this information when you apply, and can view it. But the law requires that you (but not anyone else) are disclosed every time your credit report is provided to someone else, even if this was not an application for credit. These are "soft pulls" that won't affect your score.

The inquiry you noted, from a landlord, is one such type. The most common is probably pulls of your credit report from companies you already have accounts with, followed by pulls from advertisers who make pre-approved credit offers to consumers who have not opted out of this.

Yes, I have this due to some temporary housing for work assignments. It shows as a hard pull, but is coded as tenant screening on report and does not appear to be used in FICO score calculation. I also have have another hard pull that was supposed to be tenant screening that was coded as "misc reporting" that appears to be used in FICO score calculation.
