Question concerning credit scores

Hello everyone,

I have a question concerning credit scores and I apologize if this has been asked before.

I monitor my credit score through myFICO, my last alert as of 1/23/08 states that my score is
668. Today I purchased my credit reports from all 3 along with the scores and the scores were
TU-725, EX-684, and EQ-698. I am confused as to why these scores are different and I have
not received any credit alerts from myFICO stating that my score had changed.

I would appreciate any insight that can be given.

Re: Question concerning credit scores

Well, obviously something good happened between 1/23 and today! Smiley Very Happy Congrats!

I just got a SW alert today that my EQ had jumped, and when I checked, it was because a serious late (90 days) had its second birthday this month. Do you have any baddies on your history that occurred in February of some previous year? Another possibility is that something good got even better: a newish CC turned 3 months old, 6 months, 12 months, 18 months, or 24 months. Your average history might have gone one year older, or your oldest account might have gotten a year older.

As to why you didn't get an alert, your reports are checked more frequently for potentially damaging things (new accounts, new inquiries, other things that might indicate fraud) than they are for changes that just affect your score. And there's always a bit of a delay in the CRA's updating their report info to FICO. So when you add up the various delays, it might be that you were due to get a report today or in the next few days, and you beat it. (And once you pull your scores, you won't get any alert that might otherwise have come.)

As for why your EQ is different from your TU, which is different from your EX, there are two factors at work. There are usually at least one or two differences among your reports: an account is missing from one report, or is reported differently on another. The other reason is because each CRA has a completely different FICO score formula from the other two, because they each value different credit behaviors. So EQ penalizes more for lates, TU penalizes if you have balances on "too many" open accounts, both CC's and loans, TU seems to reward having a mortgage, and EX penalizes for lots of inquiries. The analogy I use is that it's like having three teachers grade the same essay --one likes good spelling and grammar, the second likes evidence of research, and the third likes well-reasoned arguments. You can expect the grades on the paper to be a bit different according to the grader.

It's actually REALLY unusual for scores to be the same for all three. It's not even that common for all of them to be within 5 points of one another.

Savvy, if you are saying that you purchased your individual reports and scores from the individual credit agencies, then you have FAKO scores, not FICO scores. If you want your true FICOs, then you need to purchase all of the scores from myfico.com.

BTW, welcome to the forums.

Re: Question concerning credit scores

Thanks for the welcome and the replies. I should have added that I purchase the three credit scores from True Credit/Transunion and not Myfico. I guess I made a mistake. Are you saying that these three scores are not legitimate scores?

Re: Question concerning credit scores

Good catch, ByrdMan, I missed that.

Hi, savvy, yes, TrueCredit, the other credit monitoring services, EX and TU all sell "FAKO's." They've found that there is a healthy market in consumers who don't realize that there are a lot of bogus scores out there.

Since your EQ score came as part of a collection of all three scores from somewhere else, it's FAKO.

However, if you had bought your EQ score directly from Equifax (not as part of a 3-in-1 monitoring service), it would have been a FICO. Equifax is the only credit bureau that sells the FICO score instead of a roll-your-own.

You may now go hunt down the aspirin bottle. Smiley Tongue

Re: Question concerning credit scores

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately I paid 29.95 for this purchase. I should have just purchased
all three through myfico but was curious about what transunion was offering. Well at least now
I am educated and know to cancel my 30 day subscription to truecredit monitoring since the
scores are bogus anyway. You guys are great. By the way this was my first post and I appreciate
the quick response from you guys. Of course you know YOU ROCK!!!

HTSU, no problem. It's good to make a catch now and again, instead of being caught.Smiley Very Happy

Savvy, some around here use TC to monitor and then when a change happens, purchase their scores from myfico.com. Not sure how much the monitoring svc is, but if not too steep, may be a good way to go.

Welcome!!!  Your name says it all, savvy!  You will never find a better place to get credit score advice than this forum, for it is a direct consumer, and not CCC or CRA, regulated forum.   The posters on here know their poo-poo!
