Should I close First Premier now or wait???

I opened my First Premier card in September 2017 so next month they will charge me a annual fee.  I was willing to pay the annual fee now and apply for a Capital One card (can't get approved now because of inquires on EQ report) in January to replace this card (at that time all my accounts will be 1 year old except 1 and most of my inquiries would age out).  The problem is I just called the customer service department & I was just told in addition to paying a $79.00 annual fee I will have to start paying a $12.00 per month fee.  January is about 3 - 3 1/2 months away so I can pay the fees temporarily but I don't feel like I should.

My credit score as been at a standstill since I opened my last card in April.  Next month 2 of my cards will be 1 year old so I'm hoping to see a boost in my score.  In December, the other 2 will be 1 year old (hopefully I'll get another boost) and that is why I feel like January will be a good time to apply for a new card.

My question is do you all think my score will decease if I close the card now and open a new card in January?  Or do you all think I should just keep it open until January and then open the new card?

It took me a year and 4 months to get to a 650 credit score from mid to low 500s.  I made some mistakes like high utilization, opening too many accounts within the last year, and too many inquires but I haven't missed a single payment.  I believe this things have kept my scores between 620-650 for the better part of the year so the last thing I want to do is decease my score again.

Re: Should I close First Premier now or wait???

Close it now. First, finances always come first. Secondly, the close card will continue to report for up to 10 years, it will have no effect on your score when it comes to AAoA, the only possible effect is if the lost CL of $700 brings your aggregate UTI from 4% to over 8.9% but you can easily fix this to avoid the penalty hit by paying down your other cards. Lastly, don't expect scoring bumps when individual accounts reaches the 1 year mark unless the AAoA crosses over scoring thresholds, what you can expect are bumps from individual inquires and the youngest account (AoYA) reaching the one year mark.

Oh and don't forget about that Credit One, should be next on the chopping block.

Yes, I will the Credit One will definitely be next.  I just wanted to make sure I have a better card to replace it with.

I will call them back today and cancel as long as it won't affect my score.  Thank you for your response.
