When does negative info get deleted?

I keep reading that negative information remains for 7 years from the initial missed payment that led to the delinquency. Currently I have a few closed accounts that fall into this time frame. Do they get removed or should I request that they be removed?

They should automatically fall off, but I would watch it like a hawk and if it doesn't fall off in the allocated time,  dispute it as "too old".
