Where to begin...

Okay, this is my first post. I have been getting my FICO score off and on for a couple years now but I have just recently been really trying to improve my score actively. I'll give you a "brief" rundown of my story.

In 2001 ( I was 21 at the time ) I had a score of about 800. I was in the military and was married. I purchased two brand new vehicles in one year totaling about $40,000 or so. I also had the credit card I had had since I was 18 (small limit Capital One), a $5,000 Chase card and a $6000 Fleet card. Life was good. Well, in 2002 I began my divorce and was getting out of the military. Needless to say, credit cards were maxed out and car payments were missed. And of course, to add the topping on the cake, I began gambling. Long story short, 5 years later, I now have two auto collections (one paid off, one paying on) and a few credit card collections (all paid off). Oh, and the $70,000 student loan debt that went to covering my gambling. Now I have a $20,000 car that has a 17% APR and a $145,000 house with I'm not even sure what APR. At the lowest, my scores were about a 500 or so last year. Now, I am happy to say they are EX 630, EQ 635 and TU 551 ???? Yeah, I don't know what happened with that. I have tried getting some things deleted but this is where one of my problems is... all my bad stuff is MY bad stuff. It is supposed to be illegal to dispute items you know are correct, right? Also, just last month I had read about this awesome idea where you can become and Authorized User on a good account and get the good credit. Well, just my luck, today I read that it is ending this month for one CRA and will be for the others soon. I have been paying all my bills on time and recently got one of those horrible little credit cards that charge all kinds of fees just so i had SOME revolving credit. Not sure if I am looking for advice or just wanting to vent. lol. But advice is always appreciated. Thanks to those of you that actually took the time to read all this.

Thanks for sharing and being so candid! I agree that you should not dispute anything that is yours so long as it's reporting accurately. There are legal ways to remove negative information from your credit reports. Please refer to the links below, it might well be worth your time! Come back and fire away with your questions.

Credit scoring 101

PFD sample letter (use for unpaid collections, charge-offs) no guarantees but always worth a shot

GW sample letter (use for paid charge-offs, collections, late payments, liens, judgments) again no guarantees but always worth a shot
