Who to believe?

First of all, newbie here and thanks in advance to any and all responses.

Regarding my credit scores. I pulled my credit scores from "Experian Vantage Score Report".My credit score is 629 and based on info from Experian.

Then I pulled a credit score from "My Free Credit Report" and the score was 564, including 550 based on info from Experian.

The reports were pulled 2 days apart.

I have been attempting to improve my credit rating and need to know my starting point. What is the most reliable source for gathering credit scores?

Thanks again.

Re: Who to believe?

The only place besides Equifax and Transunioncs to get real FICO scores is FICO. All other scores are not real.

Re: Who to believe?

Hi, welcome to the forums!

smallfry is right --the score that you got directly from Experian is derived from a different formula than FICO scores. There are similar non-FICO scores that you can buy from credit monitoring services. They all have different score ranges, and are generated by different formulas, and they are generally lumped under the term "FAKO's".

Almost all lenders go with FICO's rather than FAKO's, so it's a lot more useful to know your FICO scores and gain an understanding of how your credit actions affect your FICO scores.

It's easiest to get all three of your FICO scores here: EQ (Equifax), TU (TransUnion), and EX (Experian.) It is possible to buy your EQ FICO directly from Equifax, and it's possible to buy your TU FICO directly from www.transunioncs.com. (Note the cs at the end of the URL.) It's a lot simpler to get them all here, and you can often buy them here at a discount.

When you pull your FICO score, make sure to work your way through the whole report to get a lot of feedback about why your score is where it is, and what you can do to make it better. The EX FICO report is pretty bare-bones, but the EQ and TU FICO score reports also list some of the things that you're doing right, and they also have a score simulator at the end that can give you an idea about how your scores might improve over time, and the possible results of individual actions.

We don't publish discount codes here as a courtesy to our forum host, except when myFICO publishes one itself. They currently have one on the log-in page for all three scores that's good through July 31, called summer20. Otherwise Google fico discount code coupon, and you ought to be able to find some that work.

Anyway, a bit more than you asked Smiley Very Happy , but those are generally questions that other newcomers have asked. Hope that helps.

Re: Who to believe?

Sorry to beat a dead horse, but if we each had a $1 for every time this question gets asked and answered....maybe someone can do a search and tell us....must be in the hundreds by now.

New members:  Read "Credit Scoring 101" and "Frequently Requested Threads" BEFORE posting!   This FICO/FAKO/Vantage Score question has been asked over and over again, ad nauseum.

Maybe another "stickied" thread needs to be created, called "FICO vs. FAKO/Vantage Score" and maybe, just maybe, this will reduce the # of repeat questions we have on the same subject.

Newbie bags troll in 3rd post. Not too shabby.

I would also watch out about the advice in raising your FAKO score that some of the sites gives since it could actually lower your FICO score.  True Credit is really bad in that area.

IMHO I think that the Vantage score has a shot in making it, besides any scoring system that says I am super prime is good in my book.
