bank card application

I currently have a debit card with my bank but if I wanted to apply for a credit card at same bank would it show up as an inquiry that would impact my credit rating or one that did not?  I've been at the same banking institution for a number of years?

Also, the above question with my credit union?

Re: bank card application

How inquires are coded is not regulated by the FCRA, and is thus discretionary.  However, since the primary purpose of including inquires in credit scoring is to record a consumer's seeking of new credit, it would be totally proper for all inquires relating to applications for new credit to be reported as so-called "hard pulls."

I am not even aware of an inquiry code that includes "Inquiry for purpose of evaluating new credit, but not to be scored by FICO."  That, in my opinion, would appear contradictory.

OP, all CC apps would result in a hard inquiry, which would factor into your FICO. The damage for that inquiry will vary based on your credit profile. IMO, inquiry damage is overrated. The point damage to be concerned over is when the new account reports, if approved. Back to inquiries, some creditors will extend an offer of credit via a soft inquiry which has no FICO impact. It varies based on the creditor. In due time, you'll get plenty of preapproval offers.
