I did not apply for credit, I just became a new member of Navy Federal Credit Union. My credit report shows a hard pull for this. Any idea why? I also obtained a CSP on Friday and will take a hit for that. The credit union pulled my credit report just for opening a savings account. Could somebody explain this?

Identity and member-worthiness verification. Most CU's do, I only know of 3 personally that don't though I'm sure there are others, fact is most of my CU memberships have unfortunately.

I called NFCU and was told what happened. They didn't mention the HP. Now that it's done, I have 30 days to apply for credit without another HP. I don't need a card, but might as well go for one since the damage is done.

yep, not unlike building a camp fire after the forest has burned down ![]()
I discovered PenFed did a HP when opening my account, and they were so busy with setting up my $5 savings account that they "lost" my CC app that went in during the same web session. So I got to do another HP two months later to get the denial for a real CC. So I used that HP to get a secured $500 CC to get something from the wreckage. The $500 wasn't earning any interest anyway, so might as well not earn any interest at PenFed.

Just in case you're watching this thread and not the one you started in credit cards.
Dont believe them about the 30 days and not HPing you again. If you apply for a card or a loan they will HP you even if it's the day after the HP for membership
Yes, I had the same experience when I open up checking/savings account. Actually it gave me a nice score boost also when it reported the HP.

A HP is always a negative: the score change may be zero, but never positive.
Something else changed on your report which didn't have a line item in the monitoring solution is the cause for the increase.

I monitor my credit through myFico, and it clearly stated thats why I had a increase in my score. I was told its a mixture of credit to your profile.

Even the Equifax portion of the myFICO 3B monitoring which is the most sophisticated, doesn't track every change on your report: not even close. I assure you an inquiry is never positive. Something else changed that you did not get a specific alert for.

Same thing happened when I joined DCU. HP for joining and then another for an auto loan, but that's okay, it was worth it.
