mortgage apps and credit score change?

Hello-

I am looking to refi. a first mortgage.  My credit union has decent rates but I'd like to apply to a few more lenders.

However I have heard that multiple applications may negatively effect your credit score?  

Can anyone help me with input on this?

If all the inquiries are done within a 30 day time period, they will count as one.

Some people argue it's a 14 day time period.
