two secured credit cards or ?

I've been working really hard over the past year to get my FICO score up to 700 (its sitting at 628, has climbed from 590).  I have had a series of 30 day late payments on my car which will be paid off next month. I recently acquired a $200 secured credit card so that I have a revolving account (I literally have no debt other than the car and no revolving accounts currently) ...the FICO FUTURE shows that when I get the card my score could go up by about 20 more points. So my questions are;

1. should I get a second secured credit card? Would that make my score higher or lower it? (And yes I do realize I need to keep the balance under 20% on the cards)

2. I tried the FICO FUTURE button and i put in the scenario that if I paid my bills on time for the next year my credit score would stay about the same with maybe a 10 point raise. So I guess one of my main questions is, what would raise my score and what can I do to accomplish that?

I really want to be able to rent my own apartment without having to leave a higher deposit or get a co-signer within the year..so I'm trying to figure out what would help.

thanks!

Re: two secured credit cards or ?

How long have you had this first card?

What other major derogs do you have on your report?

What's your past rent payment history like?

Re: two secured credit cards or ?

hey daboss.

I literally haven't even received the secured credit card in the mail yet, but it has been approved and is being sent even as we speak.  I wasn't sure if getting a 2nd one would be smart or not as far as hurting my score (my score is going to go up after i get the first one)

I have a few major derogs on my report. I had defaulted on a student loan but paid it off a few months ago. I also had some things from about 5 years ago that have yet to fall off (about 3-4 of them) .

My past payment history hasn't been great. I've been 30 days late on my car payment for prob the last year, but I am paying the car off this month.

I just want to try and figure out a way to boost my score a bit to look better to a future land lord but also for my better good.

Re: two secured credit cards or ?

Yeah i been in your situation ...

You got two goals

1.) To delute the bad history with Good

2.) To get rid of as much bad info that you can via PFD and/or GW

If you are really not wanting to go with a cosigner which may or may not be an option for you at the moment.  Your main focus in the months or year(s) to come would to show some positive payment history... meaning on time payments consistently but unfortunately if you are trying to secure an apartment very soon this takes time.  You should know atleast you should PIF monthly and stay on top of your balance for the secured car regardless of whether you chose to get a cosigner so you can become more financially independent in the future.

Your other task would be to clean up as much of your report that you possibly can.  Meaning that if your other derogs you mentioned are co/ca's unpaid you can try to pfd them or if they are paid you can try to GW them.

With the car loan you kinda waited a little long becuase you only have another month of it being active.  You would very much like this TL to keep reporting but you want it to report in good standing.  It can help towards securing the next auto loan if is reported positively.  You became a month behind and then paid timely however you never caught up that month that you missed is what i understand.  Just explain how you got behind and did your best within your budget to keep the payment from getting any further delinquent but you may have lacked the resources to get the loan current.  This may or may not fly because you could have paid a little more than the monthly payment due to gradually make the difference over the course of say four months or so ( just an example).  If it is a single isolated 30 month derog than you may have a much easier task of getting them to forgive it.  Keep in mind you want this one to work for you because it can become crucial for any consideration given it's recency.  However you may not want to wait 7 years from now for this one to report in good standing.

The student loan however you can request  a GW to delete this account.  Erase the TL entirely.  Explain the circumstances that got you delinquent on the account and that you since made good. Keep in mind this tradeline will be permanently deleted if they agree to and will not count towards your aaoa after this happens but you will have the advantage of not having a default loan on your records and when it all said in done you may end up looking like your history was great in the past few years without even ever getting any of the older five year old blemishes off. (keep in mind you would like to get rid of these too ... however by focusing on the car loan and the SL you can show a postive portraiyal of recent history Smiley Wink)

I've been in your situation before and what you're doing right now is journeying toward financial indepence so you do not have to rely on others to make moves such as this and gain a peace of mind... Good luck.

Re: two secured credit cards or ?

thanks so much for the advice! I am just ready to at least get my credit score up to 680 this year...with the secured credit card and paying on time the next few months, it looks like that is completely possible.

One question, when you mentioned the student loan you said the "GW" and "TL"...what are those? Sorry I am semi new here although I do often read the boards

Re: two secured credit cards or ?

A Good Will letter is a letter requesting the company's good will.  A letter requesting a positive change on your credit report in exchange for nothing in return.  In this case you are asking the company to delete the tradeline ( a keyword describing an account listed on your credit report), the student loans.  You only have the option to delete because it went into default and is now closed.  There is no possibility of making it current in good standing but the deletion will be enuf.

The auto loan is the only account out of the two that you have a shot at getting the company to bring the account current and in good standing before you pay it off and maybe after although they could possibly delete the Trade line as a result of good will.  You dont want them to do this though you much rather have the auto loan report a good history.  THis can help you with the next car loan down the road and may weigh in for rental history consideration which is always manual review but i definately can't guarantee that.  The student loan is a done deal this thing will only get deleted with a successful goodwill letter ... that's all you can ever ask for with that one.

Bottom line you want the auto loan to report in good standing you don't give a crap about the student loan hopefully they erase that thing.  Search for examples of Good will letters in the forums to get cha started and add your own spin.   Don't quote word for word use them just to give you ideas.
