Minutes online counter

In the last week or so I saw a post & screenshot from @Anonymous showing his profile stats and he mentioned he often logs-in and stays logged in all day. His total minutes online did not seem to me to correlate with his prodigious posting so for the last couple of days I have watched my own logging in and out and subsequent stats.

I have noticed some sessions do not credit any minutes online. I'm guessing this happens if there is a (long) period of inactivity in that session. For instance, this morning I logged in around 9:15 EST and stayed on for a couple of hours. I read, posted, etc., then went to fix breakfast, shower, etc. & returned to read, post, etc. I logged out. Twenty or thirty minutes later I logged back in & checked my stats. No minutes online were credited for this morning's approx. 2-hour long session.

It is certainly no big deal. But it is a thing that has caught my attention and as such I'd like to know how it works, and let mgt. know if it is not working as intended.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I will pay attention now that I am aware of the situation. Thanks for sharing

Yesterday I was logged in most of the day but the online counter had me for 199 minutes. This was also my most active day posting ever -- 20 posts, which is about 5x what I normally post. Go figure.

I do other things when logged in -- tend to email, make phone calls, other work-related projects, play poker, Twitter, etc., but when I get a few minutes it's convenient if the MyFico window is already open & ready so typically I do not log out unless I time out.

Odd that one of my more active days produced one of my smaller minutes online count. Smiley Wink

@UncleB would probably know what's going on, if anyone.

Re: Minutes online counter

As far as I know there's nothing going on, but I can share a few details that might help put concerns to rest.

The time spent online is managed by Khoros (not FICO) and is calculated the same way across all Khoros communities.  If there's a problem it would be impacting them all, not just myFICO.

It's been a while since I watched it closely, but I can share that it's not just time logged in that moves the counter, but time active on the forums.  If it was just total time logged in it would be trivial to game, which would defeat the purpose of keeping track to begin with.

It's common knowledge that the total time online is tied to upranking, and although I don't know the exact algorithm (only the admins do) I can share that based on what I do know it's usually not a factor in holding someone back from ranking up.  I can also share that metrics are very important to Khoros (and their clients) so if there was something amiss it would definitely have their attention.

I believe I posited such in my OP, as this seems to make the most sense. Thank you for weighing in and adding some "educated opinion" to the discussion.

But I still wonder how effectively it is working when a day i was roughly half as active (understanding, of course, I'm ignorant as to their definition of "active") as the next (today) shows twice as much time online as yesterday when it certainly seems I was much more engaged in the forums?

Interesting stuff, to me anyway. Smiley Wink Thanks for dropping in, Uncle.
