If someone doesn't know Cap 1 ways and carries a very low high balance, are they out of luck with the circumventing or will Cap 1 report a higher balance amount if it increases in the future?

Hmmm.. first instinct is to say I'd wait until it's closer to time for her to need credit. If AUs are still a legit way to help another person establish better scores when she is older, you can do it then. Since the history is immediately transferred, I don't see a benefit of doing it now as opposed to then. However, when you consider identity theft as a factor, doing it now could help one keep a watchful eye on that through the years via credit file; it's better than being surprised X number of years from now when it might be too late. LOL.. Midnight, I thought about you off and on this weekend... my best friends have Cingular and have been trying to talk me into switching over to save money for both of us for a while. It would be a little cheaper for me to go with them considering the plan itself, then factoring in the minutes with the best friends, it adds up even more. Wellll.. I am purchasing a home right now and awaiting closing, so there's no way I'm going to go to Cingular and risk the dings in case the lender has to run my credit again, but in explaining that to them, I have to admit I was sharing giggles at your expense. :) By the way... have you ever been to the main page for FICO? www.fico.com Scroll all the way to the bottom ....... ::good hearted snicker::

I know what you mean, Tuscani.. I really do. :) But not everyone realizes the comments only refer to better rates - I've seen the same remarks given when someone is asking about cleaning up their report or getting something fixed, how to make the score higher, etc. It stands to reason that if there are folks who don't know how to get the score higher, there are folks (quite possibly the same folks asking how to improve the score in the first place) that don't realize that having a higher score when times get tough might make the difference in interest rates at a later date. It's like telling an employee, "You did an AWESOME job today - you never have to try harder again, because you can't get any better!" Does that put it in a better light for making sense...? Maybe it's just me, but I get pretty tired of seeing the following statements and any variations of the like... "Why do you need a higher score? Your score is already excellent." "A higher score will not get you better rates." "Higher scores will be of no benefit to you." I can't for the life of me see the reasoning in telling someone a higher score will not benefit them in any way. If I have a score of 720 and my life changes so drastically that I miss payments for the next couple of months, you better dern well believe that having the higher score of 800 when that situation starts is more of a benefit than the 720 - a BIG one!

How it affects your score depends on the rest of your credit history and unless you paint a clear and concise picture of the rest of your tradelines and history, there is no way to judge the affect. For example, if it is the oldest account in your credit history, and your own personal credit is limited or short in life, it may have more of a negative impact on your score than leaving it on would. If you have a solid history of your own and other accounts to balance out the average age of accounts, then the affect may be neutral or positive.

You can't have it both ways - it's either fair or it isn't regarding the age of accounts. If the scoring is going to score based on the average age (which it is), then that factor has to be consistent (which it is). If I have one old account from 6 years ago when I open a new account, the average age is going to be factored into my score. When I reach the 7 year mark and the old account drops off, my average age of account on the remaining account changes which is fair and accurate; it is also a fair predictor for credit worthiness, like it or not, which is the purpose of scoring.

Something I've never seen addressed before, and just assumed was 'the norm' is the fact that EQ doesn't "fill in the blanks" when accounts are current. They report as current on mine as they should, but the monthly legend checkboxes are never completed like EX and TU. Is this part of the reason for the lower score from EQ? Just a thought...
