When dh applied for a mortgage, we were approved for 500k.  I thought 500k...who are they kidding?  We spend 300k because that was reasonable for us.   These people getting into these subprime loans are buying houses they simply CANNOT afford, just had-to-have!!!!  We have homes in our development that are basically new and up for sale.  It's not only the fault of these buyers, but the subprime lenders.  The whole fiasco is ridiculous!  To top off the subprime bs.....because our taxes are paid a year behind....plenty of buyers didn't understand the real-estate taxes....they didn't realize or understand that after one year, they would be paying taxes on the land AND the house.    Payments jumped, in some cases, $700 PER MONTH.   This is pulling down the sales in our area because people are selling at a loss!!!!   GRRR ... Those dogs at AMEX aren't fun to deal with.  For a savings of $4900, I'd take the credit hit.  Like the others said..make up the score later.  Keep us updated on this please.   AMEX closed dh account as well, but I immediately paid them in full.  DH had a big job issue with last company, he was in sales and they really stuck it to him, so the AMEX went into default because of loss of revenue.   We did have about $1200 on the 'roll over' plan with a balance now of $700.   I'll look at his cr to see what it says. ... Was this because you didn't have insurance?  My boss' wife delivered a baby and found out the didn't quite have medical insurance...she got pregnant a bit too early!  Her doctor settled for 50% and the hospitals did settle for a lesser amount.   I hope someone comes along and gives you some useful advice!  Good Luck on those Scores! ...
