The insurance increased by $50/yr from the rates on our prior 2003 Volvo S40 with 63K miles. So, not bad at all.
I've been monitoring these forums for almost 2 months now, ever since I ordered a new 2011 Explorer. The information has been invaluable to me in selecting a good instiution to finance with. So after lurking for all this time, I finally pulled the trigger this morning - joined PenFed CU online (I was able to join by paying $15 to join Voices for America’s Troops - which in my mind was a good cause anyways), then applied right away for an Auto Loan. The entire process was easier than I ever expected and their online application (asside from one glitch) was fantastic. The only problem came (I didn't realize until calling and talking to a rep) is that when I entered my VIN, it only pulled up that I had ordered a base AWD Limited Explorer. The extra options I had added were not figured into the MSRP (and I don't recall seeing a way to add them). The result was that after being approved and moving through the entire process, including how I wanted to receive my loan package, the application was put into a pending status because the system was calculating my LTV as greater than the required 85% (for 72 month term). When I called in, I explained the issue, let the rep know the options I had added (I logged into NADA and confirmed there for her the correct MSRP after adding the options/package I ordered) and she entered the information for a loan officer to review. I was told I they'd probably have an update for me in 3-4 hours, so after waiting 6 hours, I called back and checked on the status. I was told everything was approved, and arranged to have my package/check expressed out to me, so I should have my check tomorrow. If all goes as planned, my Explorer will be arriving on Monday, so I'll be all set to pick her up.
You'll LOVE your new Explorer. I've had mine almost 2 weeks, and I still feel like I'm out of my league driving it around!
