American Expresses rules on Bankruptcy?

Thanks everyone for looking!

I'm kind of curious, if you're claiming bankruptcy (Chapter 7) and have a charge card by American Express. If you choose not to 'surrender' the card since it's just a card you pay off entirely every month and carry no balances, will American Express still receive a notice from the courts?

If so, what is typically their reaction if you've had great payment history and are not deliquent with them?

I enjoy my membership with them and am concerned if they would close my account regardless because I have a preset limit of spending and enjoy using it to help limit my debit card usage.

Does anyone have any experience in this?

Thanks again everyone!

YMMV, but from my experience plan on AMEX closing your account after the BK7.  Even if they dont get a notice directly, they will see the BK7 on your CR.  Chances are that will be enough to spook them and get your card closed.  A friend of mine filed BK7 his charge card was always PIF, and as soon as the BK7 hit his report they shut him down.  He called and tried to sell them on his perfect payment history, etc but that didnt matter.  AMEX isnt a fan of BK at all!  And after you file be sure you are ready to wait a full 7 or more years to get another AMEX.

Re: American Expresses rules on Bankruptcy?

I got discharged chapter 7 jun 2014 and all my credit cards did close exception of american express, i called them and told them if they want to close the account due to my recen bankruptcy chapter 7. he put me on hold and told me my card is good to use. I repeat my bankruptcy situation again and he again said the same thing my card good to use and he also mentioned that i have been an amex cust for about 13 yrs never missed any payment. so i am using it everyday, i will continue use it untill they close it.

in the mean time i open a retail account got approved 6k.

how long have you had your amex? hope this helps...
