I just spoke with the csr for Amex and he suggested that I wait 6 months to ask for a cli because anything before that would be automatically declined and will require a hp. Has anyone else heard of this?
They tell you a lot of false information. You can get your first CLI on a new account at 61 days, provided you haven’t gotten one in the past 6 months on another Amex account.

Did you ask for the full 3X CLI ($30k) and get countered with $25k, or did you only ask for $25k and get an instant approval?

Yes I am sure CLI is a denial. I did check his preapprovals Hilton card was listed applied instant approval 1000cl. So at least it wasn't 500 . baby steps
How do you check preapprovals?
I only asked for 25k. I should have asked for 30k.
1. Login in to your online American Express account.
2. Click on Menu > Cards > View All Cards
3. Select any card you're interested in, and click on the "Apply Now" button
4. If you're pre-approved for that card you will see a message stating "FirstName, you are preapproved! Get a decision in as little as 30 seconds."
If you're NOT pre-approved for that card the message will read "Applying to expand your membership with us is easy, FirstName"
5. After the message you can decide how to proceed; either hit your browser's Back button if you don't really want to apply, or complete the requested information and click the "Agree & Submit" button.
You can also navigate using Menu > Cards > Credit Card Offers; or Menu > Cards > Check for Pre-qualified Credit Card Offers but those two options tend to show only 3 cards including those you might already have.
