I've had the same cell number (my only number) for 15 years+. A few months ago I switched from Sprint to Google Fi. Google Fi doesn't have contracts, it's prepaid.
The only other info I could find online is a recent flyertalk thread about capital one verification code errors:

I called the number and the CSR said this is a new thing that just started with Capone. They verify your phone bill is in your name (mine is). It doesn't work for group plans if you're under a family plan or whatever and it doesn't work for "prepaid" phone plans. And this is the ONLY way they can verify you online. Otherwise they have ways to verify me if I call them. So I basically have to call if I ever want to do a balance transfer.
Whether that is true, idk. But fyi
Yeah, I don't mind the verification...but if the verification process is broken then, maybe they should fix that lol! Seems a bit amateur to me.
When I signed up for CapOne it rejected my Google Voice number (which is probably what Google Fi ported your old number to). Annoying.
