Re: Citizens Bank 5% card: shock/horror!

Omg, you're really telling me that sometimes you have to wait 45 seconds for someone to pay???

Childhood ruined. I'm crushed again.

I'm probably dating myself here, but raise your hand if you remember being at the grocery store and the old lady in front of you in the express lane rings up 4 items and then ... gets out her checkbook.

I don't see how much simpler, easier, and faster they can make it without compromising security. If that's still too inconvenient for some, so be it I guess.

It may be a function of how quickly you can be ready to be on your way. Waiting in line, and you have time to get your phone ready. Paying for 1 item and no one in line, then its a pain. Paying for 7 items, probably not that bad.

Went to the gym Monday night, went to scan my badge on my keychain, with one person in front of me. He had the mobile badge. He saw me behind him while he was launching the app and stepped aside. I scanned and was on my way. He was still there after I was 50 feet away.

Paying isn't going to be gym quick, since you have to hand over items, other people are in line, etc. So it depends on how quick the transaction is. For ultra simple functions, mobile takes too long.

You can't compare a gym app (I have something similar with BSC) with Apple Pay's wallet. With Apple Pay, you're not launching an app, you're not unlocking your phone, you're not tapping on icons.

Literally: phone out of pocket, thumb twice on home button, leave thumb down on second tap to register thumbprint, done. If you want to use a different card than you typically use, you swipe to the card you want to use before leaving the thumbprint down, but opening it is the same double tap on home.

Takes a bit more dexterity than just grabbing a card out of your pocket, but the total transaction time is about the same.

If we are at the point of mobile payments as quick or almost as quick as a card, it comes down to  an earlier thread of wanting too much on a phone, when the phone is lost, stolen, dead battery, etc, that it stops me from paying until the physical cards are used. But we beat that topic to death.

Yes, but to get 5% until March 31st, you must apply at a branch.

Re: Citizens Bank 5% card: shock/horror!

A quick unsolicitated update on experiences with the card.

1) I don't have anything that says the 5%, all the stuff with the card and on the statement only mention the 1.8%    But when I call, they tell me it's on the account.  But no chat or secure messaging, all verbal, so I hope I don't have to post in May "The XXX won't pay me the 5%"!!!

2) Took 80 minutes to get through today to the rewards specialist.   Fortunately I was able to [upsetting description deleted] while waiting on the phone.

3) Like Amex of old, rewards can be redeemed only in $25 INCREMENTS.

4) Even better, I have $83, and the "How much to redeem" slider only let me go up to $50.    The rewards specialist (see above) explained that I can redeem $50, then do it again and redeem $25, which worked.

5) She also said that they can help a customer redeem up to $300 at a time, with a max of $1000 per month , so they do 3x300 + $100    In previous offers, this slowed down those that racked up huge rewards, you can only get them $300 a month!

6) No secure messages/chat (see 1)

But, they do give 5% till the end of March (well, I hope they do) and paying some estimated tax becomes worthwhile....

You did apply in person, correct? That's a requirement for the 5%.

I'm thinking they will improve redemption in the future. They might have rushed out the product with bare minimum website support. Let's hope so.

I'm not a fan of $25 increments where you can't redeem the entire balance.  For instance, $83 can only be redeemed for $75, not $83. My Propel does that.

And then Citi won't allow me to redeem my cash rewards to my new checking account, only to my Citizens checking account, which is CLOSED.  Lol. They told me I need to make 2 monthly payments from the new account,  then wait 45 days after that? 3 1/2 months? Or was it 15? I don't remember.

I requested a check. So many reward redemption quirks out there.
