Discover More Recon SUCCESS!

Ok, so let's start at the begining...

I got my first card right before I went off to school, a USAA Platinum card with a lowly $600 limit, at some point they bumped that to $1000. I've had that card for about 4 years now. For a while there I ended up unemployed and ended up maxing the card out, but I always managed to make my minimum payments.

Recently I started a good job and finally have the money to pay it down.

So around 2 weeks ago my brother applied for the same USAA Platinum card and got approved, and it got me thinking about what my credit score was, I happened upon this site and saw I could get my score for free, so I signed up and was shocked to find my score was 717.

Now I want to buy a newer car in the next year or so, so I decided I was going to app for a few credit cards to diversify my credit and reduce my utilization.

First card:

APPROVED

CREDIT CARD: Citi Forward
BUREAU PULLED: EX I believe
CREDIT SCORE: EQ: 717 TU(CK FAKO): 713
CUSTOMER STATE OF RESIDENCE: TX
AAOA: 3 Years 10 Months
UTILIZATION: 80% (lol)
HHI: $28080 (That's what I report, currently living at home so the actual household is much higher...)
CREDIT LIMIT: $2300

So after that my EQ score droped down a point to 716 (I knew it would go up once the new card reported and my util dropped) but then I got impatient and I made my first mistake.

I waited for a few days and then apped for my next card:

DECLINED

CREDIT CARD: AMEX Blue Cash
BUREAU PULLED: EX
CREDIT SCORE: EQ: 716 TU(CK FAKO): 713
CUSTOMER STATE OF RESIDENCE: TX
AAOA: 3 Years 10 Months
UTILIZATION: 80% (lol)
HHI: $28080 (That's what I report, currently living at home so the actual household is much higher...)

The four reasons I was given:
Proportion of revolving balances to revolving credit limits is too high.
Length of time accounts have been established.
Proportion of loan balances to loan amounts is too high.
Too many inquiries last 12 months.

Of the four, I'm fairly certain the one that killed me is the first one.

I pulled CR from quizzle a few days later, and while I know the score isn't accurate it does get the Experian CR, and I was looking at my listed accounts and while the Citi card had shown up, it wasn't currently showing a CL... so I was still at my rediculous utilization. Unfortunately the card being listed still dinged my AAOA.

I really wish I had read on here more and had apped the Zync card instead of the blue, o well, will probably be the next card I app for in 6-24 months.

Anyways then I decided I was going to do one more thing and then end my apping for at least 6 months. I was going to try and get a CLI for my USAA card. Seemed easy enough. I put my entire paycheck onto my card and then didn't spend a sent of it (I had my new Citi card by then so I was able to use that since it won't report until january, and yes I plan to PIF) My statement date was last tuesday, so I waited until saturday, still hadn't gotten a scorewatch alert, but I saw my TU FAKO from CreditKarma had gone up and I got impatient again.

DECLINED

CREDIT CARD: USAA CLI
BUREAU PULLED: EX
CREDIT SCORE: EQ: 716 TU(CK FAKO): 742
CUSTOMER STATE OF RESIDENCE: TX
AAOA: 3 Years 2 Months
UTILIZATION: 30% (lol)
HHI: $28080 (That's what I report, currently living at home so the actual household is much higher...)

At that point I was totally bummed, and then I notice on my desk a Discover Pre Approval leter, and I decide **bleep** it, might as well get one last app in before this inquiry reports and I figure it's best to get them close to the same time, so they will all fall off at once.

So I go for it:

DECLINED

CREDIT CARD: Discover More
BUREAU PULLED: EQ
CREDIT SCORE
: EQ: 716 TU(CK FAKO): 742
CUSTOMER STATE OF RESIDENCE: TX
AAOA: 3 Years 10 Months
UTILIZATION: 30% (lol)
HHI: $28080 (That's what I report, currently living at home so the actual household is much higher...)

But there was hope, I notice the only listed reason for my being declined was too many inquiries, of the ones that were currently listed on my CR, one was ATT (srsly), so I figured why not and called to try for recon (did this with AMEX too but that was pointless)

So I called later that saturday, and talked to someone, she said she was going to refer it to a supervisor and I should hear back within 24 hours.

Then I waited, Sunday... Nothing... Monday... Nothing... So now it's today, tuesday, and I figure it probably means they still declined it, but why not call and confirm.

I call and the woman tells me that it doesn't look like a supervisor ever looked at it (it kinda sounded like the first woman never even noted my account or had forgotten to do something), she puts me on hold for 3-4 minutes and comes back and says she had a supervisor review it, and he was able to overturn the decision... I was APPROVED with a $4000 CL (and she asked if that was enough rofl)

So here I am 2 weeks later with 8x the credit I started with, a slightly higher score, much better utilization, and a whole lot better educated.

Definately learned my lesson, when it comes to credit patience is a virtue. I'm just so glad that this last one got approved, kinda takes away that bad taste in my mouth like the whole ordeal was a failure, plus it made the apping itch go away. No more wondering if I apply for just one more then maybe I'll get approved. Now I can comfortably say I won't be apping anything else for at least 6 months, probably at least a year or more.

All in all I think it worked out okay, ended up with 2 new prime cards without totally ruining my credit, and for anyone else apping for Discover, it's definately worth attempting recon. Smiley Very Happy

Re: Discover More Recon SUCCESS!

Now wait a few months and go back and do Amex again...

congrats on your successes, I would recon USAA about that CLI now if they want to be your go to card!

Re: Discover More Recon SUCCESS!

I wouldn't even really know what to say to USAA, I doubt there is much they can do without pulling another credit report.

The sad thing is the $1000 limit is really not enough for me to use consistently, I spend at least 1500 a month and wanna keep it all on one card. I do really need to switch it over to their rewards program, as the cash rewards is pretty worthless.

Honestly the Citi Forward will probably be my main card. I did the rewards program, and it works out well for me, a good chunk of my spending is at restaurants, bars, movie theaters etc, plus there is 5% at amazon.

The Discover will be more of an emergency/secondary card other than the times when the rewards for the quarter are something i'll be using like gas. It's main benefit is it will keep my utilization down plus it will age well since I'm only 23, I want to get a few good cards and just keep em.

I don't really see myself using the USAA card much anymore though, there really isn't much benefit to it other than a low intrest rate, which is irrelevant for the next 12 months anyway. The only other nice thing is I can cash advance into my USAA bank account without a cash advance fee.

As for reapplying for AMEX, that's the last major card I really want, but I think I wanna wait till I'm more certain it will get approved next time. They said I have to wait at least 3 months or it will automatically deny me (who knows if that is true)

Now I just gotta figure out how to get CapitalOne to stop sending me offers, I know better than to get one of their cards...

PS: Wow this thing is messing up my posts hardcore

Don't say that. Some of their cards are pretty decent like the No Hassle Cashback (no AF) 2% gas/groceries and 1% on everything else plus they don't charge foreign transaction fees. I'll spend 3 months abroad next year, and this will be my go-to card for that purpose. It'll save me a ton of money in transaction fees. Also, they hand out generous limits for those cards. I got a World Mastercard with $7500 and it even reports the credit limit correctly on my reports. I was afraid it wouldn't but it does!

I think Cap. One is better than their reputation. For those rebuilding their credit, they offer MUCH better cards than, say, First Premier and other similar operations. They're mainly known for their low-level rebuilder cards. But as I said, they do have good "real" cards.

Re: Discover More Recon SUCCESS!

Fair enough, they aren't all bad, but they aren't shopping me the good cards... The most recent one has 0% intruductory and then straight to 22.99% which is higher than the range listed for the same no annual fee cash rewards card on their website which shows APR range as 12.9%–20.9%

At the end of the day, if you use the cards properly, it really shouldn't matter what company your cards are from.

That's actually the one other kind of card I want to get at some point besides an Amex is a MasterCard World Card (or possibly a Visa Signature, but the World seems better to me)

I would actually avoid them. I got them not by my own choice. Most of them don't do anything for your credit report as they don't always report the limit. Read up on the problematic issues that have been discussed here. They apparently charge the merchant higher fees, so in the end they will cost us all.Banks love to dish them out and make the customer feel important: Look here, Joe Miller, you are special, and we give you our Signature card.

They have a concierge service. Sounds nice in theory. I've never used it. I've never needed it. It's basically a guy with a computer and internet, and it might be helpful in some rare situations.

They offer some extra insurance benefits (lost luggage etc.) but I am not sure if they're worth trading the traditional VISA/MC in for. They send you coupons for luxury dining and that kind of stuff. I've got a baby, and we need to spend our money wisely. We've got no need for 10% off a $200 dinner. That is my impression of VISA Signature. I could be wrong. Also, others could have different demands on a card. It might fit their lifestyle. It doesn't really fit mine.

Re: Discover More Recon SUCCESS!

Hadn't really thought of that, I wish there was somewhere to find a list of some of the better, or more sought after cards. It seems like every site I look at favors certain card issuers over others with no apparent reason or is only looking at the best cards for the rich (Amex Platinum, Visa Black etc etc).

I'd even be happy to get a list of some of the better card issuers, the only reason I ended up with the Citi Forward is I noticed quite a few users here seem to have one and the rewards seemed to fit with my lifestyle. The discover I had read some good things and I got a pre-approved app...

I also was considering the World card simply because I plan to do a bit of traveling eventually over the next few years.
