I need to make a rather large tax payment and was thinking about picking up an amex plat where I could meet the signup bonus easily with such a large payment in taxes. Before I apply will amex give me any issues with making tax payments on this card? I have the money in my account but figure it may be worth it to get the signup in the meantime.
As long as your income and profile support it, there should be zero problems. I met my Starwood signup bonus in a single transaction that way last year.
shouldnt have any issues with Amex's side provided that your internal limit is big enough.
I would check though to make sure they take AMEX. When I just paid some taxes. It was visa,MC, Disco only. No amex option for both state and local tax(RITA). I didnt end up owing the IRS anything so I can't comment on if they take amex.
I've used my personal SPG at pay1040 a few times without incident.
None at all. I did this on the Plat I just got to meet the bonus and then some.

Who is “they”?
You can pay your taxes through multiple vendors. You don’t need to pay backtaxes through your preparer.
The OP’s bigger concern should be a financial review, not whether or not the IRS will accept their card.

You certainly can. But I think the government charges a processing fee for charge cards. Just something to consider. May or may not matter to you.

I think most, if not everyone will gladly eat the fee for easy reward bonuses. The Plat’s signup bonus is 60,000 points, easily outweighing any 2.5 percent fee charged by the third party processor.
