Hard Inquiries Question

My question is about credit inquiries when buy a new vehicle.  I understand this is a hard inquiry meaning it will reduce my scores but I don't understand if this means every inquiry.  I've heard this type of inquiry is similar to a mortgage inquiry - understanding two or more credit checks would likely indicate I'm shopping for one new ride not several.  If this is the case is what limits exist?  X number of inquiries or number of days for the inquiries to take place within?  Any info you can share is greatly appreciated!

The inq's must be coded properly, just like mortgage inq's to be de-duplicated in scoring -
