Age of negative items

I've read numerous times on this board that as baddies get older the effect on fico lessens. How old? 1year?2?3? 

On another note...

LVNV funding. Tried and tried to get them to GW. Went the BBB route and still not budging. They are ruthless. TL to report until Jan 2015. I feel I have exhausted all options with them so I will have to let it "age off"

Depending on the negative.  A single 30 day late hurts for far less time than say a CO.   Collections older than 2 years old probably have less impact on your score, though they will continue to hurt until they are gone.
