So enjoy watching TED talks! Anyone else here like watching them?
I'd love to make this thread a place where that if anyone finds one that's inspiring to them they can post it here for others to benefit from. (Maybe we also could write a line or two just sharing what info touched you.)
Here's a main page that shows a good many of them: http://www.ted.com/talks/browse
http://www.ted.com/talks/mellody_hobson_color_blind_or_color_brave
To the main topic of race - My favorite line relating to this was: "Imagine if I walked into a room and it was of a major coorporation like Exxon Mobil and if every single person around the boardroom were black, you would think that were weird. And if I walked into a Fortune 500 company and everyone around the table is a white male, when will begin to think that's weird, too?" Observe your own environment, that's something that we can all do. Be color brave. As a white male, I wish the best and no harm for every single race, creed, and sex.
My favorite line, "That drill was to make you feel comfortable being uncomfortable, because that's how most people spend our days. If we could learn to deal with our discomfort and just relax into it, we can have a better life." Now that doesn't speak to the larger ideal of the video, but I found that line to be really profound and hit my core.
I love TED. I really want to attend one year.
1) http://www.ted.com/talks/ruby_wax_what_s_so_funny_about_mental_illness
This Ted Talk was really personal to me because I've struggled with the idea of having mental illness and the ignorance surrounding mental health. Ruby Wax succinctly discusses mental heath and the paradox that physiological illnesses garner sympathy, except for the brain.
2)http://www.ted.com/talks/william_black_how_to_rob_a_bank_from_the_inside_that_is
Really interesting talk regarding banking fraud that caused the recession in 2008.
3)http://www.ted.com/talks/george_takei_why_i_love_a_country_that_once_betrayed_me
This is a very inspiring talk from George Takei that makes me think about how to be a more inclusive society.
I'll post more when I find them again.
Barry Schwartz: The Paradox of Choice
Probably my favorite TED talk of all time.
From its description, "...choice has made us not freer but more paralyzed, not happier but more dissatisfied."
I love TED Talks. Here are a couple of videos that were released in December 2014 in which I watched:
Catherine Crump: The small and surprisingly dangerous detail the police track about you
Verna Myers: How to overcome our biases? Walk boldly toward them
