We just purchased a new Audi and financed with Cap One at dealer.   They mentioned other banks but rates touch higher.  
However, when we looked at the hard inquires, we didn't see that Audi Financial was pulled.  

Wouldn't this be something " automatic " ?

Not necessarily, no.  IF the dealer looked at your credit based on the dealers own HP  and hestitated you would get an approval through Audi Financial, they would just send you elsewhere.  Also, if the incentive for the dealer was greater with Cap One, they would just tell you this will be better for you and send you there so AudiFS may never have in fact seen your credit.

Finance Managers looking at multiple credit applications, credit files, scores and captive lender approvals tend to have an understanding which lender is providing the best rate for individual scenarios at that time prior to submittal. Most applicants appreciate a reduced number inquiries even though it really doesn't matter.
