Hey everyone,
Recently I found a good deal on a Range Rover I wanted to purchase. I negotiated with the dealership and then we agreed on a price and then they told me that if I wanted to use financing that I would just need to fill out their application and they would take care of the rest.
Well they called me back a little later and long story short they said "We were able to get you the best financing rates through US Bank." I said "Great!" and then they mentioned that they shop around multiple places on my behalf to see who will give the best rate. I thought "well that's definitely convenient and saves me time of doing it myself", additionally I always thought that auto or mortgage inquiries that happen within 30 days were counted as a single inquiry. (I might be off on the days, but that's besides the point.) After agreeing with all of the terms and everything it's been a few days and I get a notice that my credit has changed so I went and checked it out... I see 4 new inquiries on my account.
The way these inquiries show up is like this:
Lender Industry Inquiry Date
US BANK INDIRECT SE | Bank | Sep 6, 2016 |
BANK OF AMERICA | Bank | Sep 6, 2016 |
JPMORGAN CHASE BANK | Bank | Sep 6, 2016 |
LAND ROVER - AUSTIN | Automotive | Sep 6, 2016 |
So my question is, should those four inquiries only really show up as a single inquiry or should all four still show up but somehow they are just counted as a single one or since the dealership did this on my behalf are they truly 4 separate hard inquiries?
The INQ's are there as the dealer shopped the loan exactly as you said. Fortunately as long as they are coded as auto INQ's and within 30 days of each other they will be scored as one(according to the FICO algorithm) but they will show up based on whoever the dealer shopped with.
Is there any way I can find out how the inquiries are coded?
Thanks for the reply!
I am not sure if there is a way to see if they are all coded as Auto.
To confirm, you will have the 4 INQs for two years although they will only count for the next year. And yes, they should count as one inquiry for scoring purposes.
